Golf has witnessed many rising stars. And adding herself to the list of players rising through the ranks is none other than Emily Pedersen. After turning professional in 2015, she was able to turn many heads in her direction with the amazing skills that were displayed on the golf course. The Danish professional dubbed herself a talented athlete owing to her feats on the greens, including five wins on the Ladies European Tour. However, she couldn’t have done it without some help.

Although the athlete should be given a lot of credit for the amount of hard work and dedication she has put in over the years, it wouldn’t have been possible without someone supporting her on the greens. Well, this thought has piqued the interest of many in the community, leading them to the question: Who is the professional’s looper?

Pedersen made a top-notch decision when she employed Michael Paterson to help her out with her bags. The latter has been caddying for the golfer for a long time. The looper grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland, with his family.

His interest in the game arose from his dad and grandpa, with whom Paterson shares fond memories. Although the Scot did not play any collegiate golf, his passion and love for the sport led to him turning to the bags in 1994 in a bid to help other professionals on the greens. And he has been doing the same for close to three decades now.

Paterson’s career as a caddie

He has a vast amount of experience assisting golfers on the course. The Scottish looper has carried the bags for a lot of professionals, including the likes of Karrie Webb, Janice Moodie, John Senden, Akiko Fukushima, Joanne Morley, Peter O’Malley, Michael Sim, Helen Alfredsson, Scott Stallings, and Ryu So Yeon.

With the 29 years Paterson has been caddying, he spent more than half of it—a whopping 15 years—with LPGA Hall of Famer Webb. The long partnership was truly iconic, as the duo saw a total of 51 victories in the Aussie’s professional career, including all seven of her major titles.

Paterson’s long run with Webb

The two split up in 2015. Despite them parting ways with each other, the Australian athlete still considers the looper one of her closest friends, owing to the long run that they had. Webb points out the “loyalty, hard work, and friendship” that the two had all the while dubbing “Mikey” as the “1 person in her (Webb’s) life that she would know for sure would stand up for her.”

What about the Scot? He is of the same opinion as well. Moreover, when asked about his greatest memory while on the bags, Paterson would always recall his time with the ex-pro during the Kraft Nabisco Championship, which is now known as the Chevron Championship.

In 2006, Webb needed a birdie to force a playoff with Lorena Ochoa. But there was a slight obstacle. The Aussie had to cover 112 yards to get to the hole. She chose a pitching wedge and took her shot. Everyone watched in anticipation as the ball bounced toward the greens before finally dropping inside the hole. This led her to a playoff with the Mexican golfer, which she subsequently won and claimed her seventh major. Truly deserves to be one of the Scot’s greatest memories.

Paterson’s love for caddying

The longtime looper has been helping Pedersen for a while now and has helped her win the bulk of the six victories in her professional career. The number of accolades that the Scottish bagman has helped various professionals garner speaks a lot about his love and passion for the game and the job.

When asked about the same, Paterson remarks, “Playing a small part in the success of some of the most talented athletes in the world has been great.” Adding on, he mentions how seeing the pro athlete up close from a certain perspective that many people would do anything to witness, all the while being in constant interaction with the golfer, is what makes the experience worthwhile.

His affection for the sport is something he shares with his wife, Tanya Paterson, who has been carrying the bags for Ashleigh Buhai for three years. Well, with his passion for the game, one can’t help but hopefully look toward the success that Pedersen will experience going forward with the Scot.
