The rivalry between two countries is not a rare occurrence in sports. Such is the case even with golf as we see two nations in a battle of wits as their players lock horns on the golf course. The golfing world has been on its toes as the 2023 Open Championship is reaching its climax. There is much excitement and tension on and off the course. While the players are battling it out, as is the case in any sport, the fans are taking it upon themselves to participate in the game one way or the other.

In golf, there are cases when the crowds shout out certain phrases or random words which turn out to be completely rubbish or in some cases hilarious. Such occurrences are often seen in American tournaments. But recently, in The Open, while Rory McIlroy was playing his tee shot, someone shouted a phrase that shocked the fans and drew in many responses, both hilarious and otherwise.

The Open Championship has been told by several pro golfers to have a great ambiance. But sometimes, the rivalry between two nations tends to bring out the worst along with the best out of people. In a video uploaded by a Reddit user, while McIlroy drives the ball, someone in the crowd goes on to shout out a phrase. Moreover, in addition to posting the video, the user didn’t forget to add the title “ Wait..I was told that the UK fans were much classier than the American fans..?? 😅 “, which basically took a dig at the British crowd at the tournament.

While the video just shows him making a shot along with the phrase “oh yeah!!” from the audience, the user who uploaded the post took this as an opportunity to take a jab at the British audience. While the rivalry between US and UK is well known in the golfing world, it is rare that we see fans getting into it.

Recently even Rickie Fowler had an unfortunate incident. The young golfer went on to state that “Other than maybe a ‘coward’ comment here or there, 99.9 percent (of the fans) are amazing”. He was heckled by a fan regarding him dropping out of the Leeds United investment to which he gave a suitable reply later on. Even though dissed by a heckler, he didn’t forget to state his love for the tournament.

The Reddit post has bought in many responses from various users in the community. While some people use their comments to take a shot at the other country, other people try to come up with an excuse for their behavior albeit in a funny manner. Let us now take a look at some of the comments left under the post.

Some of the users opened up about their experience of the championship as they mentioned how badly some British lads behaved. “There was a group of British lads on the Friday at the 12th that were clapping and cheering when players were landing in the bunker. Furthermore, they refused to pick their rubbish up even after being called out by the crowd a few times.”

Some fans went on to find the funny side of things as they listened to the comment made by the member of the crowd. “I’m not a big fan of the “uhh yeah” craze but the timing of this one is hilarious 😂” Some of the users went on to give a funny reply mentioning how this certain shout-out doesn’t count and one shouldn’t take it into consideration since it’s from Liverpool. “It’s Liverpool, it doesn’t count.”

There were some fans who went on to talk about how they might have been Americans in a hilarious manner. They went on to comment: “They have this thing called an airplane.” And also included: “Probably an American visiting.”

Another person went on to equate how people from Liverpool are the same as people from Florida who are known for their craziness, as they put up the comment: “Scousers / Liverpudlians = Floridian.” While all this transpires, one person went on to talk about the absurdity of the whole situation and commented: “This whole “who is classier?” thing is dumb. Fans are having fun and that’s good.”
