Who is carrying Phil Mickelson’s bag at the LIV Golf Event?
The six-time major champion ended his long hiatus from professional golf on Thursday, June 9th, at the first LIV Golf Invitational Series event. He teed up at the demanding Centurion Golf Club outside London for the first of the eight-event schedule of the new Saudi-backed golf league. Moreover, the 51-year-old had his experienced comrade, his brother Tim Mickelson, helping him navigate the challenging golf course.
The duo joined hands in 2017 when the 45-time PGA Tour winner announced that he was ending his terms with Jim Bones MacKay. MacKay was the Lefty’s caddie for 25 years, and Phil won five major championship events under his guidance. Moreover, the American professional announced his separation from Bones, and he took his brother Tim as his caddie through a tweet he made using his official Twitter account on June 21st, 2017.
When Phil announced that his brother will be behind his back, Tim had a very surprising reply. He said, “We had never talked about it. Until the day he called, I had never envisioned myself as a caddie for him or as a caddie on the PGA Tour.”
Since then, the pairing of Tim and Phil have enjoyed several sweet victories together at the 2018 World Golf Championship- Mexico Championship. At the same time, the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Lefty’s sixth major championship triumph in 2021 at the PGA Championship. Moreover, Mickelson is currently at an overall score of four-over-par, as he enters the final round on Saturday. He is presently 13 strokes back from the leader, and it will require a mammoth task to get back into contention.
What did Tim Mickelson do before carrying Phil’s golf bag?
Before teaming up with his brother, Tim was the men’s golf coach at Arizona State University. The famous caddie successfully ran as a coach at Tempe from 2011 to 2016 and was the lead man at the Sun Devils when the former World Number One in the Official World Golf Rankings, Jon Rahm, used to be in the University’s team.
Before coaching the Sun Devils men’s golf team, Phil’s brother was the head coach at the University of San Diego for eight years. He even played at the 1999 Buick Invitational but did not make the cut. Tim also made a start on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2001 but also missed the cut there.
Approximately five years ago, Tim was also an agent. He was the agent for the rising name in golf, Jon Rahm, while Mickelson still had MacKay on his bag. Furthermore, World Golf Hall of Fame Member’s brother was Rahm’s caddie for 17 months while working with Lagardère Sports. Do you think the duo will win an event on the LIV Golf Series?
