The Sentosa Golf Club course was creating havoc for the LPGA Tour pros, as the world no.1 Lilia Vu exclaimed, the course was playing though. However, despite the harsh conditions, the Japanese star on the LPGA Tour has moved up with her illustrious two rounds. At the HSBC Women’s World Championship, Ayaka Furue has taken a berth at solo second on the leaderboard.
Although she shot only one under in the opening round, Furue ended round two with 6 under 67 with seven birdies. In the last three starts, the 23-year-old golfer has made two top-fives and at the Sentosa GC, she is inching closer to the second victory at the Tour. The incredible performance of Furue could not have been possible without her trustable bagman. Who is he and when did he start as her looper?

Ayaka Furue debuted on the LPGA Tour in 2022 after she made a name for herself on the LPGA of Japan Tour; Furue had won eight times before entering the LPGA Tour. As she gained her Tour membership in 2021, the 23-year-old hired Michael Scott as her caddie. The two started their run from Gainbridge, LPGA at Boca Rio.
Furue carded a top-20 finish with the help of Scott’s guidance. Moreover, in the same year, Scott gained his first professional victory with Furue at the 2022 Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open. The Dundonald Links being a frequented course of Scott, the veteran caddie had all the tricks under his sleeves which helped Furue to take a win.
Scott’s attempts to help Furue were rightly appreciated as his employer credited her win to him. “He calculated that very well and helped me out with wind direction and how the wind affects play.,” Furue said in her post-match interview. Furthermore, the win was extraordinary as it happened in Scott’s hometown. Even Furue was excited that Scott got to experience the win in Dundonald Links. As Golf Digest reported, she said, “I am so happy that I was able to win in my caddie’s home country. He is always a big help to me.”

The two have played more than twenty events together and will be completing their third year as a duo. However, Furue was not the only woman golfer that Scott has helped win. The caddie’s resume is deeper and richer than most caddies these days.
Michael Scott’s career before becoming Furue’s caddie
Michael Scott started his caddie career with a local professional from Scotland in the 90s. However, later in life, Scott moved from the greens of Scotland to that of America and Asia. He started caddying for various LPGA and LET pros, two of the prominent names in his portfolio are Anne van Dam and Laura Gonzalez Escallion. He was on their bag in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

Scott helped Dam take the second victory of her career on the Ladies European Tour. They won the 2018, Estrella Damm Ladies Open with 26 under 258. When he jumped on the bag of Escallion, Scott assisted the 33-year-old pro attain her first top-25 finish after missing the cut for ten consecutive events in 2019.
The Glasgow native has a sharp eye and a plethora of experience when it comes to golf. But when he is off of the golf course, Scott’s hobbies take an adventurous turn. The caddie is an avid traveler. From skiing and snowboarding to rock climbing, Scott enjoys it all. He made a recent trip to the Isle of Skye in Scotland.

He hiked the Beinn an Cro mountains with his dog and friend before riding his bike through the alleys of Scotland. Although his skiing and hiking days are pretty interesting in themselves, per Scott, his favorite story happened in Asia. Though he never revealed the full context, Scott has warned everyone to “Never trust a fart in Asia!!!” when describing his Interesting caddie story to the Professional Ladies Tour Caddies Association.
