Is Leona Maguire's success more about her talent or the unwavering support from her family?

Leona Maguire has become the first Irish golfer to win the Ladies European Tour. She achieved this feat at the Aramco Team Series in Centurion Club London. The 29-year-old, who turned pro back in 2018, has already earned five professional wins on three different tours. Her finishes in the women’s majors have already seen three top-10 finishes and two top-20 finishes.

However, this golfer has not been able to achieve it all by herself. Behind her success, Maguire credits her family for supporting her immensely. But before we dive deeper, let us first look at some tidbits of Maguire’s personal life.

Born on November 30, 1994, Leona Maguire hails from County Cavan, Ireland. Although Maguire was initially interested in swimming, she made a difficult decision at the age of nine. It was primarily when Maguire shifted her focus and passion towards golf. She completed her collegiate career in golf at Duke University in 2018 and changed its history for good.

As mentioned on her website, she became a two-time Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) and ANNIKA Award National Player of the Year. Maguire accumulated ten victories, twenty-four top-five finishes, thirty-five Top Tens, and thirty-nine top-twenty results over her incredible career at Duke. She registered Duke records in even or under-par rounds (87) and most rounds in the 60s (32). She became a three-time All-American and ACC Player of the Year. However, Maguire’s life is incomplete without her twin sister, with whom she tends to fulfill her bucket list. This included ticking off a canyon adventure.

Leona Maguire’s twin sister

Leona Maguire is the younger of the twin sisters. Her older sister, Lisa, was born 15 minutes earlier. Although both the sisters had turned pro in 2018, the elder was not able to keep up with the game. She retired a year later, in 2019. However, she was seen on home grounds again in 2022, at the Irish Open Pro-Am. Although Leona Maguire has surpassed her sister on the greens, Lisa Maguire decided to stay by her twin as the manager.

Lisa has never been as active on social media as Leona Maguire. But this does not mean that the elder sister forgot to show off Leona’s achievements to the world. When Leona won the event in London and created history, Lisa Maguire shared a photo with her sister on her Instagram and wrote, “What a start to the summer holidays! Incredible 🦅 finish to get that first @letgolf 🏆 @leonamaguire ⛳️🇮🇪”

Lisa is presently a client manager at Modest Golf Management which is run by the former One Direction singer, Niall Horan. However, she has also acquired experience in dentistry from UCC. As an amateur golfer, she had a stellar career where she represented Ireland and Europe for six consecutive years. She even won her nation a trophy in 2009 at the European Girls’ Team Championship. However, her most remarkable achievement must have been her rank in the World Amateur Golf Ranking’s Top 10 list.

The twins also have a younger brother, Odhrán Maguire, who currently resides in Dublin. He is graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, this year. Their parents are Declan and Breda. Declan retired from his teaching job two years ago, and his whole family was there for him. The entire Maguire family shares a deep bond.

When Breda’s mother and Leona Maguire’s grandmother, Marian, died in 2022, her dad stated, “We all think she [Leona’s granny] had a hand in last Saturday. ” He further added, “She used to say, ‘If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be’ but she made sure to say the rosaries anyway and light all the candles to be sure—she’s definitely saying them up above too. ”According to the Irish Mirror, “Leona and Lisa were both marked out as golfing prodigies from the age of 10, and Marian was their greatest supporter, saying decades of the rosary for their success.”

Kathleen Maguire is their paternal grandma. Leona Maguire was reported to be with his grandma during Christmas. She once shared a photo with her. In the caption, Maguire wrote, “So good to be home after a long year; nothing is better than spending time with family ❤️ Gordon Ramsey has nothing on this Queen’s famous Christmas puddings 👩🏻‍🍳🎄#95yrsyoung #whenigrowup.” Needless to say, they all love each other very deeply.
