The 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic is a family affair for Jay Haas. Haas, a nine-time PGA Tour winner, is caddying for his son, Bill at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club. But when Bill was a kid, Jay never envisioned this day. In fact, he wanted his children to play other sports. But Golf was the side effect of having clubs and balls scattered around your house.

The Haas family though is synonymous with South Carolina’s golf; Bill’s great-uncle was the 1968 Masters champion, Bob Goalby. As the father-son duo takes center stage in Myrtle Beach, here is what we know about his PGA Tour Pro and golf instructor sons.

Haas’s first son, Bill is a PGA Tour Pro with six titles under his belt. In fact, in the 2010 PLAYERS Championship, both the father and the son were on the field. Although Jay missed the cut, Bill Haas tied for 39th. Two years earlier, they paired up at the Zurich Classic, the Tour’s only team event. Jay Haas became the oldest player to make the cut at any PGA Tour event at 68 years and 4 months.

The oldest son, Jay Haas Jr. also couldn’t escape the lure of Golf. Jay Jr. is the instruction and swing coach at the Haas Family Golf. For some time, he has also caddied for his brother on the PGA Tour. “[I]f you watched Jay Jr. swing, he has a beautiful swing. Most would say, ‘Wow, what tour is he on,” the veteran golfer said about his son. But Jay Haas believed his eldest son lacked the confine necessary at the top level.

Jay Haas also has a daughter, who was more into basketball. Twice the veteran golfer attended his daughter’s state basketball game choosing to skip a PGA Tour Champions tournament. Not much is known about Jay’s daughters. Reportedly, the entire family is present at Myrtle Beach as the 70-year-old loops for his son.

The idea was of Jay Haas though. Certainly, Bill didn’t think of asking his father to carry his bag at 70, that too, just months after a back surgery. But when the old man proposed, the 41-year-old didn’t refuse. Bill Haas said, “His (Father’s) career hasn’t allowed him to be my caddie. But it is nice. He’s my coach. He’s the mental coach and the swing coach and the guy I bounce any golf stuff off of.”

Asked if the bag weighs too heavy on his shoulder, Jay Haas laughs. He is not used to it. But the bag is small and the “course is fairly flat”, the 18-time PGA Tour Champions winner pointed out. “If you get a few under par out there it’ll be a lot easier,” Haas Sr. quipped. Bill Haas carded 2-under 70 in the opening round.
