Tiger Woods’ planned gesture of gratitude to the Scottish town that gave him two of his 15 majors hasn’t sat well with its residents. Joining forces with Justin Timberlake, Woods’ proposed sports-entertainment venture in St. Andrews was next in line after the T-Squared Social sports bar in New York.

The 15x Major Winner’s foray into the entertainment business is part of his vision for community development. The proposed bar cum indoor sports hub was supposed to open next year. But a petition to block the project is already getting popular support from Fife residents.

Tiger Woods has fond memories of St. Andrews

For Tiger Woods, St. Andrews has a special place in his heart. The 47-year-old golfer won ‘The Open’ twice here in 2000 and again in 2005 on the old course. On the other hand, the 10x Grammy winner has also teed up at St. Andrews during the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2019. It was not surprising that the duo chose the small town with a population of 16,000 as their next stop for the T-Squared Social venture.

The T Squared social venture aims to renovate the New Picture House Cinema into a golf bar with craft cocktails, state-of-the-art golf simulators, duckpin bowling, darts, and large-screen televisions streaming sporting events. The residents, however, feel that the venture will only cater to rich tourists from outside. Whereas, with only one screen remaining, it will take away a vital part of the town’s life: cinema.

Bunkered reported that a petition to block the redevelopment project moved by Ash Johann Curry-Machado, a student at St. Andrews University, has gathered more than 2500 signatures. According to the petitioners, the 90-year-old New Picture House Cinema has a longstanding cultural heritage. Any damage to the cinema hall also means an assault on the town’s distinct identity.

It should be noted that this feeling is not unanimous. David Morris, the manager of the New Picture House Cinema, has voiced his support for this project. As did some citizens, who felt the town needed to surge ahead with the changing demands of time.

Tiger Woods’ sole aim behind the project was to add value to community life. This is in line with the aim of the TGR Foundation, established in 1996 by Tiger Woods and his late father, Earl Woods. The 82-time PGA Tour winner’s son, Charlie Woods, has also been carrying forward his late grandfather’s legacy.

Charlie Woods plays a vital role in the TGR Invitational

Tiger Woods has been absent from the course since pulling out of the Masters earlier this year. Charlie Woods, on the other hand, has been marching forward with great momentum, clinching back-to-back wins last month. Teenage Woods was also seen carrying forward his late grandfather’s wish as he was seen teeing up with his father at Pebble Beach during the TGR Invitational.

For Woods Junior, his biggest moment of this year will come next month. The Florida High School Athletic Association’s state golf championships will test the strength of the 14-year-old golfer on November 6. But before all this, Tiger Woods was seen inculcating in his son the values that his father taught him.

With that being said, both Timberlake and Woods would want an amicable solution to St. Andrew’s problem—a solution that goes parallel to the TGR Foundations’ aim of providing value and community building.
