As the 2023 Open Championship came to a close at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, it served as an event to test the spirit of many experienced players. The hype for the event had reached an all-time high as it ended on Sunday. Moreover, the tournament had brought much excitement and drama to the golfing community.
On the testing golf course at Hoylake, Rory McIlroy, along with many other experienced golfers, were not able to pull off their best finish. While winning or being able to secure the top position by the end of the tournament became instrumental in improving Brian Harman‘s ranking, the finish the Irish golfer had wasn’t enough for him to get the ranking he hoped for, leaving his fans much appalled.

Although he put up a stunning display of skill and resolve, Rory McIlroy could not place himself above the 6th position at the 2023 Open Championship. Moreover, he was unable to capture the No. 1 position in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), thereby occupying the same position he held after his previous week’s win. The Irishman took home a prize of $551,250 in the Open as he finished with a score of 6-under-par 278.
Rory had last won the major in 2014 at the course in Hoylake, but last week he was unable to replicate history. In the hopes of alleviating the 10-year drought, “Rors” had hoped to win the major, which would have also let him capture the World No. 1 position. Earlier, he had risen to No. 2 after a stunning performance at the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open.
The top of the ranking still remains settled at the hands of Scottie Scheffler, despite his finishing at T23 in the recent major. The American golfer ended his run with a score of even par 284 and took home $121,490 in prize money. On another note, the winner of the major championship, Brian Harman, jumped from No. 26 to a whopping 10 as he lifted the Claret Jug on Sunday. The 36-year-old American golfer won the event with a score of 271 (-13), winning $3 million in prize money.

McIlroy’s rise to the second most coveted spot
The Irish golfer was able to produce an electrifying performance in the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open to win the tournament and take home a prize of $1.5 million. He was able to outperform his competitors, as he birdied the last two holes to win the event. While this win bought him the title and the prize money, it also helped him rise to the No. 2 position in the OWGR.
While currently in second place, McIlroy has, in the past, been able to hold the top spot a number of times. He has spent a total of 122 weeks in the top position. While his recent success had presented him with an opportunity to contend with Scheffler for the top ranking, he wasn’t able to capitalize on it to rise to No. 1.
