

In 2009, Trevino sat in his house just five miles from his childhood house, about to hit 70. There he talked to Golf Digest and narrated the story of his not-so-cheerful journey. He had to suffer a lot in his life owing to racial discrimination.

When former POTUS, Barack Obama was elected President, the nation celebrated, and the retired golfer was also part of the celebration. He cried and was happy that the country was finally ready for a Black President. “I cried. I thought the country had arrived to elect a black president.” Trevino said, “I didn’t think I’d see it in my lifetime.”

And when asked if the selection was personal for him or had a special place in his heart, he said, “I’ve felt racism. I think everybody has prejudice.” Because of the disparities, the Mexican kids were not allowed in the pool, and Trevino suffered that pain. “the dark Mexican kids weren’t allowed in the public swimming pool in Dallas. My light-skinned friend got in, and he laughed at us,” explained the former golfer. However, as a kid, he did not know what was happening to him. And eventually, he learned that these things did not affect him.
Trevino had to go through what most people of color experience on the daily, his struggles and pain reverberate through years of discrimination. What he has achieved in his journey, remains an inspiration to millions of people and children of color worldwide.
