Does Sergio Garcia's Cowboys fandom make you respect him more as an athlete?

With just one more event, LIV Golf’s season will soon come to an end. The 54-man roster will be visiting Bolingbrook Golf Club in Chicago, Illinois to compete for the $25 million purse and the Individual Champion trophy. As the preparation for the showdown is underway, it seems that not all LIV Golf pros have reached the Bolingbrook greens. At least not Sergio Garcia.

The Spaniard has flown across Michigan Lake to watch his favorite NFL team take on another challenge. Well, it seems that Garcia resonates with Texas more than any other state.

A recent series posted by the Spaniard on Instagram shows that he first watched the University of Texas Athletic’s Volleyball match against Indiana at the Gregory Gymnasium, which the Longhorns eventually won.

Then he was at the Texas Longhorns vs Michigan Wolverines match. And you would not be wrong to assume that the 1-time major winner was once again supporting Texas. He was extremely happy as his favorite NFL team, the Longhorns, defeated the Wolverines by 31-12 and the entire Michigan Stadium celebrated with the iconic hand gesture of the Texans.

It was a great week for Garcia as he shed off some stress of the LIV Golf Chicago and enjoyed the week before teeing it up at the Bolingbrook GC for a potential victory, which would be his first at the breakaway circuit. But you would be wondering why, of all teams, Garcia decides to support the Longhorns in most sports. The connection is quite personal to him.

What’s the connection between Sergio Garcia and Texas?

Have an interesting take?

Looking at where he is from, Sergio Garcia does not seem to have any relation to Texas. Well, he was born in Borriol, Castellon, Spain, which is thousands of miles away from the Longhorn state. Then what strikes Garcia’s interest in Texas athletics? It goes back to the 2016 Rio Olympics when the Spaniard met Angela Akins.

She was a former collegiate golfer from the University of Texas in Austin and was then a reporter at the Olympics. Briefly after their first meeting, Akins and Garcia started dating. And in January 2017, the 1-time major winner popped the question and Akin said a big yes. The couple tied the knot in July 2017 and has been together since then. They also have two children together, Azalea and Enzo.

So even though Garcia was not a native of Texas, his love for his wife turned him into a Longhorn fan, and with her on his side, they usually watched many sports supporting them, whether it’s Volleyball, collegiate golf, basketball, or America’s favorite sport, Football. Now his full attention will be on winning at LIV Golf and taking a trophy home.
