Founded in 1899 by William R. Farrand, the Detroit Golf Club is famous for its long history and impeccable game experiences. Designed by the well-known golf architect Donald Ross, it has two 18-hole courses now. The journey started from a single 6-hole course.

The club was initially established with a membership limit of 100 golfers. Then, the club started expanding, and by 1900, three additional holes were added, making it a 9-hole course. The club started growing rapidly in the early 20th century. By 1902, it had doubled the club membership to 200 members. The club purchased 135 acres of land in the same year and continued expanding. In the year 1906, the Detroit Golf Club was formally opened, and the membership fees were raised to $250.

These courses are known for their tricky bunkers, rolling greens, and layouts that require precision and years of experience. The club has been hosting RMC ever since its inaugural edition in 2019. It has witnessed five winners so far, lifting the classic trophy. Additionally, Detroit GC also hosts Michigan Medal Play. To this day, the course remains private and exclusive.

The North and South courses, which each have their own unique challenges, were completed by 1916. The North Course, in particular, has gained popularity over the years for its strategic layout, which makes the game hard even for skilled golfers, making it a fitting setting for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. In 1918, the clubhouse construction was also over. Maintaining its reputation over the years, the club has been actively adapting to the new needs of each generation.

The historic club is on the path of renovation

The Detroit Golf Club, crossing a century of golfing, is set for a significant restoration project. Scheduled to be completed in 2026, this $16 million master plan is being overseen by the architect Tyler Rae. This makeover will not only fix the major drainage issues but will also enhance the golfing experience.

“As we approach Detroit Golf Club’s 125th year, we are celebrating the past but also looking toward the future,” Michael Pricer, DGC president, said in an interview, mentioning that the renovations are not only about modernizing the infrastructure but also about preserving the timeless designs and the legacy of Donald Ross.
