Scottie Scheffler & Rory McIlroy are heading to Texas! They will be playing in the first of the two exciting events before the Masters Tournament, the Houston Open 2025. The Texas swing will be the final opportunity for the PGA Tour stars to get some practice before heading to Augusta National. And there is no better place to do so than the Memorial Park Golf Course.
In fact, Tony Finau confessed, “I don’t think that there’s a better prep golf course leading up to the Masters than Memorial Park. It’s a big golf course. I think they try to set it up where it’s similar to Augusta National maybe to have guys play. I know that was the case many years ago when it was at other golf courses,” while speaking to Golfweek. Having said that, let’s get to know the beautiful course better before watching the best PGA Tour stars play on it.

Brief history of the Memorial Park Golf Course
Built in 1912, the course was originally a 9-hole retreat for recovering soldiers at Camp Logan. After 23 years, John Bredemus took up the project to completely redesign it, turning the Memorial Park Golf Course into a beautiful 18-hole golf park. After it was reopened in 1936, Bredemus claimed that it was the greatest golf course in the world. It became the home of the Houston Open from 1951 till 1963. The golf club saw legends like Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer play on it often. In fact, Arnold Palmer also won the Houston Open at the Memorial Park Golf Course in 1957.
However, after years of wear and tear, the course lost its prestige. In 1995, Mayor Bob Lanier supported the campaign to restore it to its original state. The Memorial Park Golf Course was restored in the same year and turned into a 600-acre club. The course was redesigned again by Brooks Koepka and Tom Doak in 2019 to make it suitable for modern golf players. And for the fourth year running, the Houston Open will be held at the Texas-based course.

The Memorial Park Golf Course stretches 7,292 yards and is played for a par-72 during the PGA Tour event. But are there any challenging holes across the course? Let’s find out.
Tough curves and challenging roughs in the Houston Open
There are several challenging holes across the 7,292 yards of the Memorial Park Golf Course. Hole 17 is a short par 4 challenge that requires accurate fairway wood or iron shots to avoid the obstacles and reach the green in regulation. The thin fairway off the tee and the large lake on the right make it difficult to hit the right spot sometimes. For the second show as well, only a thin layer of the fairway is available to make the best shot possible to hit the green. Players can take a risk and hit longer off the tee if they are confident of not landing in the water.

But the most difficult obstacle is probably the 14th hole. Another par 4 that’s 529 long, the fairway is extremely thin all the way through. Either side of the fairway and the green is surrounded by large rough areas and trees. Approaching the green will also be a challenge due to the bunker at the bottom right. The 14th hole was listed in The 30 Hardest Holes on the PGA Tour in 2024 by My Golf Spy. But we guess the players would have a far better understanding of just how treacherous it can be.
