After many years of battling for their well-deserving rights, women in golf are finally getting their due. Now the game of golf is not just about Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and many other male golfers. The names of Annika Sorenstam, Juli Inkster, Lexi Thompson, and the Korda sisters have also become very important faces in this sport.

The privileges and the prize purse have been increasing. After the conclusion of all five majors in 2023, now the prestigious Solheim Cup stares women’s golf in the face. Next year, there is another edition of the Solheim Cup. Let’s find out what has caused back-to-back Solheim Cups as well as the venues for 2024 and 2026.

Why the Solheim Cup is returning to even-year format?

In the second last week of September 2023, the Solheim Cup will be held in Europe. Last it was held in September 2021 at the Inverness Club, Ohio where Europe claimed victory over the US with a score of 15–13. In 2023, the event is being held at Finca Cortesin in Casares, Andalucia, Spain. The excitement among the fans to see the world’s best female golf players coming together and teeing it up is very high.  The fans can enjoy again next year as the tournament returns in 2024 and there are certain reasons for that.

The inaugural Cup was held in 1990 after which the tournament was held in even-numbered years until 2002. 2003 onwards it became an odd-numbered event after the Ryder Cup changed to even-numbered years on account of the 9/11 attacks. Then in 2020, another reshuffle of team golf events took place due to the pandemic and the Solheim Cup has been again rescheduled to even-numbered years from 2024 onwards.

The 2024 Solheim Cup returns to US

In early June this year, the LPGA announced that the tickets for next year’s tournament are available for purchase. Next year the Solheim Cup at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia, a suburb southwest of Washington D.C. from Sept. 10-15, 2024. The course is designed by legendary golf course designer Robert Trent Jones and is located about 30 miles from downtown Washington D.C., on Lake Manassas, an 850-acre reservoir.

Jones, who has designed other famous courses like Spyglass Hill, Firestone Country Club, and Bellerive Country Club, bought this land with the desire of attracting a world-class membership. He called this course his masterpiece. The course is surrounded by water all around. However, the only holes that any golfer needs to fly the ball over open water are the par-three fourth and par-three eleventh holes.

This won’t be the first time that the course will be hosting a prestigious golf tournament. It has hosted the inaugural Presidents Cup in 1994 as well as three more editions in 1996, 2000, and 2005. In all the match-ups, Team US defeated the international teams. Then in 2015, PGA Tour’s Quicken Loans National was also held at the course.

The course is a heathland golf course characterized by a compact layout and tricky water hazards and designed by famous architect Kyle Phillips.
