Rory McIlroy has triumphed at TPC Sawgrass! The now 28x PGA Tour winner had the Irish luck as he celebrated winning THE PLAYERS Championship 2025 on St. Patrick’s Day. With that, McIlroy also won two PGA Tour events in a season before April for the first time in his career. His first win came at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where he also made his season debut. Other than that, McIlroy has also had two top-25 finishes in the other two PGA Tour events he has played this year.
Overall, the Irishman is sticking to the statement he made in January about playing fewer PGA Tour events in 2025. But his next big challenge is a trip to Augusta National. The one major that has evaded Rory McIlroy throughout his 18-year career is the green jacket event. Fans have witnessed McIlroy showcase some brilliant strokeplay in the Masters Tournament. However, he has always fallen a little short of actually capturing the prestigious major title.
In his 16 attempts in the major event, McIlroy has made 13 cuts and finished in the top 25 12 times, 7 of which were under the top 10. On one of those occasions, he had also finished as a runner-up to his PGA Tour rival, Scottie Scheffler in 2022. McIlroy has seen many of his peers wear the green jacket but hasn’t been able to grab one for himself yet. But this time around, the Irishman is laser-focused. He has been in his best form in the past few months and has a great shot at winning the Masters Tournament 2025. And to prepare for it, McIlroy is planning to play one more PGA Tour event from now until April 10, 2025.

Rory McIlroy’s next possible trip after TPC Sawgrass
As mentioned above, there are three tournaments played between THE PLAYERS Championship and the Masters Tournament. They are the Valspar Championship, Houston Open, and Valero Texas Open. Interstingly, McIlroy has played in all three events in the past. But it’s the Houston Open where the Irishman has had the most appearances. However, McIlroy doesn’t have a great record in the Memorial Park Golf Course. In four attempts, he has only made it into the top 10 once. Moreover, the last time the Irishman played in the tournament was 11 years ago, in 2014.
What’s your perspective on:
Will Rory McIlroy finally conquer Augusta and claim the green jacket this year?
Have an interesting take?
Rory McIlroy has only played in the Valspar Championship once in 2018. That too was not as promising as missed the cut with a 5-over par 147. In fact, the field for the event has already been released. This confirms that he might not partake in the tournament.

But the Irish luck seems to be working for McIlroy at the Valero Texas Open as he has had a runner-up and a third-place finish in three appearances. His first run in the tournament was in 2013 where he finished second to Martin Laird by two strokes. In 2022, McIlroy missed the cut with a 1-over par 145. And in 2024, he finished third, though by a huge margin of 9 strokes. Nonetheless, it seems that the 2025 Valero Texas Open might be Rory McIlroy’s preferred choice judging by his record in the event.
Do you think he will be at the Oaks Course on April 3, 2025, to tee off in the tournament? Let us know in the comments section.
