Does the Greenbrier's rich history make it the perfect venue for the 2024 LIV Golf event?

LIV Golf is known for its controversial 54-hole gameplay and generous investors. However, these are not the only things that the Saudi-funded league is known for. It is gaining fame in the golf world for its Golf But Louder motto and is grabbing people’s attention with its courses too. The upcoming LIV Golf Greenbrier course is not one to miss, and rightfully so.

The Old White Golf Course at the Greenbrier Resort has a rich history, and it is more than a century old. It was the first 18-hole course built there, as it was opened in 1913. The course was named after the Old White Hotel, which was in service from 1858 to 1922. Charles Blair Macdonald, a famous golf course designer, created this beautiful golf course. Did you know Macdonald is known as the father of American golf course architecture? If you didn’t, now you do.

As time passed, many golfers played the Old White Course, but they found it too hard. So, Charles Macdonald’s partner, Seth Raynor, was asked to make some changes. The course we know today still has its original charm, all thanks to Lester George, who carried out a major renovation in 2006. With narrow fairways lined with trees and greens protected by obstacles, he helped preserve the course’s classic character yet added a modern flair to it.

The renovation began with George installing new drainage systems and building new paths for golfers. Then, with the guidance of historian Bob Conte, George studied old aerial photos to understand the course’s original layout, which helped him preserve the history around the course. After the research, he planted vast stretches of tall grass to frame the course beautifully, and he also removed several trees on the fairways. And now the course is as perfect as it was a century ago.

Old White TPC milestones

The Old White has seen a lot of milestones, whether it was Glenna Clonnet Vare winning the U.S. Women’s Amateur Tournament in 1922 or LIV golfer Bryson DeChambeau securing the trophy at the 2023 LIV Golf Greenbrier after shooting a low-round of 58. However, one thing that was a constant throughout the years was the PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic, a competition on the FedEx Cup.

Have an interesting take?

The Greenbrier Classic golf tournament was held at the Old White Course for the first time in 2010. And what a show it was! Stuart Appleby won the tournament by one stroke after shooting an amazing 59 on the last day. He finished at a jaw-dropping 22 under par and took home the trophy. Appleby’s great playing made the tournament exciting and memorable, and the Old White Course was a great place for this special moment in golf history.

The Greenbrier Classic was held on the Old White Course until 2019, and the tournament was permanently canceled in 2020. But then LIV Golf Greenbrier took over in 2023 and found a home at the Old White TPC. So, are you excited about the tournament? Let us know in the comment section below!
