Nelly Korda equaled Annika Sorenstam’s record of winning five consecutive LPGA events after grabbing the win at the women’s first major of the season. Starting the last round one stroke behind Ryu Hae-ran, she finally bagged a 13-under-275 to win the Chevron Championship—her fifth-in-a-row victory and second major. Unfortunately, that massive run has come at a cost.

The continued consistency seems to have caught up with Korda and hurt her health. She withdrew from the JM Eagle LA Championship this week ahead of the event, forcing fans to wait a little longer for her sixth win. The 25-year-old American golfer confessed that her body was in dire need of rest, given the constant strain that she had endured over the last month.

It was not an easy decision,” she said when talking about pulling out of the event. “After the unbelievable week at The Chevron and grinding through the mental and physical challenges of four events in the past five weeks, I am feeling exhausted. With so much still to come throughout 2024, I feel I need to listen to my body and get some rest, so I can be ready for the remainder of the season.” So when does the remainder of the season start for Korda?

After this week’s stop at the course in Los Angeles, the next LPGA is the Cognizant Founders Cup in New Jersey from May 9th to May 12th. That’s followed by the Mizuho Americas Open, before the Tour finally heads to Pennsylvania for the second major of the season, the US Women’s Open.

While Nelly Korda will almost definitely be competing at the major, her return may come before that at either the New Jersey event or the Mizuho Americas Open. Why? Well, after her break, the World No. 1 would perhaps want some momentum going before she tees up to reclaim her 2021 crown from the US Women’s Open. Last year, she had quite a forgettable T64 finish after a 13-over 301.

Depending on whether she thinks she needs a break immediately before the major or not, Korda will likely compete in either of those events. Last year, she skipped the Mizuho Americas Open and missed the cut at the Cognizant Founders Cup, so a shot at redemption for both is on the cards too.

Is Nelly Korda making a smart move with her break?

If the past is any indication, then Korda certainly knows what will bring her true glory on the greens! For the World No. 1, golf is a lot more than just skill on the greens; her strategy of breaks too has played an important role, and this year stands testament to that. Soon after beating Lydia Ko in a playoff to win the Drive-On Championship this year in January (her first of the season), the LPGA star took a break.

Nelly Korda stayed off the grounds until the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship in March, where she returned with a bang and took him her second win with another playoff win, this time over Ryann O’Toole. What followed were three more wins, making up her current streak of five.

Undoubtedly, the close-to-one-month break turned out to be effective for her gameplay. This time, however, it’s unlikely her break will be as long, but regardless, seeing as to how she’s not injured, even a week or two of rest might do the trick to help her reset and return refreshed and ready to bag her sixth!
