Angel Yin has had a topsy-turvy start to her LPGA season. First, she started with a strong T18 finish at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions. She improved from there for her second event, the Founders Cup. She scored a brilliant 11 under par across the four days but was 10 strokes away from Yealimi Noh in the first place.
But the glory she sought came at the Honda LPGA Thailand, as Yin claimed the first place at Pattaya with a dominating 28 under par beating second-placed Akie Iwai by one stroke. Her clear improvement is there for all to see, as she is going from strength to strength. The HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore was to be her next test.
She started testily, scoring 4 over par on her first day. But she stuck to her strengths and delivered a brilliant comeback to get on even par for the tournament. However, just as she could use that momentum to her advantage and push through for the final two days, the American golfer had to withdraw due to illness.

The strange illness could be related to what her caddie had contracted as well. Michelle Simpson, Yin’s caddie had also fallen ill during the middle of a round in Singapore. She then had to quickly bring in her temporary caddie who was with her during the victory in Thailand, Sakchai “Tom” Sirimaya.

The discomfort could be a result of the lack of adjustment to the weather patterns in Southeast Asia. If that is the case, Angel Yin could likely take a rest during the Blue Bay LPGA event in China next week and might only return at the Ford Championship in Arizona. She will be a big miss at the tournament where she would have had a chance to build on her excellent start to the season. But she is not the only golfer who might miss the Blue Bay event.
Jenny Shin withdraws from the HSBC Event after Angel Yin
Jenny Shin was looking to clinch her first LPGA title in 8 years at the HSBC Women’s World Championship. She had finished day 2 with an overall score of 2 above par before the South Korean golfer had to withdraw due to illness. She took to social media to share her plight.

“Had to WD today from the tournament… unfortunately feeling very ill with fevers and body aches… one of those unlucky weeks,” Shin wrote on her Instagram story. She’s opting out of Blue Bay to recharge before making her return to Arizona for the Ford Championship. As she put it, “Three weeks off, then it’s go time at the Ford Championship. See you all soon!”
The 26-year-old Yin is a great example of resilience, so the general expectation on the tour will be that she will be back at it from right where she left it. Do you think she will be able to win her third LPGA title when she is back and fully fit?
