Bryson DeChambeau speaks Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson
DeChambeau has been quick to make a mark on the golf establishment. Known for his quirky experiments, the ‘Mad Scientist’ has made quite the impression among his peers. He has done so with many achievements already, with the 2020 U.S. Open being the jewel in his crown.
On top of that, DeChambeau made his Ryder Cup debut merely three years after his debut as an amateur on the PGA Tour. While it didn’t go as planned, DeChambeau felt honored to have represented his country. “To me, there is no greater honor than having the opportunity to put on the red, white, and blue in competition and represent your country. To have the opportunity to play on the 2018 United States Ryder Cup team was a great honor,” he said.
DeChambeau was also thankful for the opportunity to team up alongside childhood idols, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. “I had the chance to partner with both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson that week in Paris. For me to get a chance to partner with two of my childhood idols in a Ryder Cup is something I will never forget,” he added.
DeChambeau paired up with Mickelson in Friday’s afternoon foursomes before returning the next day with Woods. While he lost both games, it turned out to be an eventful ceremony for him. Pumped up from his inaugural Ryder Cup appearance, DeChambeau vowed to make amends in the next edition in 2020. But did he?
How did DeChambeau perform at the Ryder Cup?
For starters, the 2020 Ryder Cup was moved to the following year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While Whistling Straits remained the host of the event, there were quite a few changes to the roster.
DeChambeau could no longer cling on to his idol Woods, who at the time was recuperating from a single-car rollover accident in February 2021. On the other hand, Phil Mickelson was a non-playing vice-captain for the particular biennial event.
However, Team USA put up a commanding display to take home the Ryder Cup following a 19–9 victory. While DeChambeau couldn’t bring his A-game to the competition, he finished unbeaten in three games. He managed 2.5 points in the event, which was better than his losing streak in the previous edition.
