In 2018, after his Ryder Cup play, Mickelson was dissatisfied with the rough course and did not like playing on it. Let’s dig deeper into what happened.
The Ryder Cup 2018 incident
After losing both of his matches in the 2018 Ryder Cup, Phil Mickelson criticized the setup of Le Golf National, saying that the rough made the course “unplayable.” Mickelson waited until he had a strong opening round in Napa to express his criticisms.
Mickelson had a tough time during the Ryder Cup. After an abysmal 30th-place finish at the Tour Championship, he lost his matches at the Ryder Cup in Paris. It was a low point for him, as he looked terrible and wasn’t playing near his best. He spent more time hitting the ball during that one week than he did all year, showing how hard it was for him. It’s been a struggle for him ever since he shot 63 right before being picked for the cup.

After his loss in the Ryder Cup, Mickelson said that the course was brutal and almost unplayable. He told this to reporters following a first-round 65 at the Safeway Classic, during the first event of the 2018-’19 PGA. He also said that on the PGA Tour, he could miss the fairways and get shots out of the rough and still be playable, but not at the Ryder Cup.
We know Mickelson for never shying away from giving his opinion. He said, “I’m 48. I’m not going to play tournaments with rough like that anymore. It’s a waste of my time.” He added he will only play the courses that are playable now and he wants to play aggressive. His plan was to attack and make a lot of birdies.
