Is Rory McIlroy's career on a downward spiral, or will he rise from his recent setbacks?

No one would like to see September end more than Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman lost out to Rasmus Højgaard in the Amgen Irish Open, on home soil, and to add more to his plight, he was again forced to be second best in the BMW PGA Championship the very next week.

Billy Horchel’s long putt from the edge of the green in the second playoff hole made him the first American golfer to win the BMW PGA Championship twice. With back-to-back second-place finishes, the world no. 3 will be itching to right his wrongs and bring home the win in his next tournament. But when will that be?

Where will Rory McIlroy play next?

McIlroy will play next at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland, as per his official website. McIlroy loves to play at the Home of Golf, as he said a couple of years ago, “The support I’ve had from the Scottish and visiting fans has always been fantastic and I have had some wonderful memories on these courses. St Andrews is a very special place for me.”

The tournament, to be held from 3rd-6th October, is played over 3 courses, the Old Course (St Andrews), the Championship Course, Carnoustie (near Dundee), and Kingsbarns Golf Links. His father, Gerry McIlroy will be joining him for the Pro-Am.

He last played in the tournament in 2022, finishing in 4th place. He has never won the event, although he has had 6 top-10 finishes in his last 9 appearances. He finished second in the 2014 edition of the tournament, beaten by Oliver Wilson, and this was also McIlroy’s best-ever finish in this tournament.

With the likes of Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed, and many other big names from LIV Golf participating, the spotlight will be shared by many on the greens. The Irish golfer enjoys playing this event as he mentioned in 2022; “I’m really looking forward to playing. It’s one of the most long-standing events on the DP World Tour and one I really enjoy, especially when I partner with my Dad.”

Rory McIlroy’s 2024 season in a nutshell

McIlroy won twice this year on the PGA Tour: the Zurich Classic, and the Wells Fargo Championship. On the European Tour, he won the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, and it was at the beginning of the year. But he only got one top-10 finish in the major – with his second-place finish at the US Open. He missed the major by merely 1 stroke, and he was so heartbroken that he decided to not talk to the media or anyone, and just head to the airport. This was the second time in a row that McIlroy had finished at T2 at the US Open.

His performances in other majors added fuel to the fire, with his T22 finish at the Master’s Tournament, T12 finish at the PGA Championship, and missing the cut for The Open. With his last major championship win coming back in 2014, McIlroy will be eager to prove himself, and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship can be the perfect place for him to shake the cobwebs from a frustrating September.
