The game of golf went through a paramount change in 2022. Much of the controversy stemmed from the inception of a rebel league. Funded by one of the wealthiest funds in the world and helmed by a former golf great, the league came to be known as the LIV Golf Series. Fresh from its inaugural season that left many unsettled, LIV is set to commence its second season. But when do the games (and controversies) begin?

LIV Golf set to start in Mexico

Compared to its debut season, the LIV Golf Series promised to be back, bigger and better. The league made a giant splash in June 2022 with its inaugural event in London. However, the schedule for the upcoming season will be extended, with the games set to start at the end of February.

The scenic El Camaleon Mayakoba Golf Course, located in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, is set to launch the second season of the LIV Golf Series. The course has been a long-standing PGA Tour host for the World Wide Technology Championship since 2007.

The event will occur from February 24, commencing a relentless schedule for LIV golfers.

What other events make it to the LIV Golf season?

A fortnight after its debut event, the Gallery Golf Club in Tucson will host the following LIV event. After its third event in Orlando, LIV will move to foreign lands, precisely to Australia. Adelaide will play host to the country’s debut LIV event, which is expected to be heavily watched due to the league’s Aussie roots. CEO Greg Norman and star golfer Cameron Smith hail from the Oz, and have earlier expressed their delight about LIV moving to their home country.

Another overseas event is set to host the LIV Golf Series. The Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore, which features breathtaking scenes of the city’s iconic cityscapes, will make its debut in the LIV juggernaut.

The schedule then moves back to the United States, with events in Tulsa and Washington DC, before making a short trip to Europe. The historic Valderamma in Sotogrande, Spain, is set for a LIV event on June 30. A week later, the LIV contingent will return to the Centurion Club in London for the course’s second series event.

The LIV Golf Series then shifts to its final leg in the U.S., with events in Greenbrier, Bedminster, Chicago, and Miami, before the season-ending team championship. The picturesque Royal Greens Golf Course in Jeddah, which hosted an event last season, will host the grand team event on the first weekend of November.

Players to cheer in the new LIV season

Indisputably the best player in its inaugural season, 2-time major championship winner Dustin Johnson will be the man to watch out for. The 38-year-old secured top-10 finishes in all but one tournament, en route to winning the LIV event in Boston. He also captained his side, 4 Aces GC, to the team championship, which involved a stupendous run of form involving four consecutive victories.

However, the 2022 Open Championship winner, Cameron Smith, looks set to spring up a challenge. The 29-year-old had a monumental season at the PGA Tour last year and looked set to follow in the footsteps of his yesteryear hero, Greg Norman.

Indeed, he has heeded the golf great’s advice but has quit the PGA Tour in order to join Norman’s LIV Golf Series. The Aussie won in his second start at the league, at LIV Chicago. But whether he would be able to challenge Johnson for a sustained period remains to be seen.
