Their fifth victory in six matches among the two sides came in late with the spirits of Seve Ballesteros, as images of him appeared on their sleeves and bags. During the closing ceremony, it was also said that Europe that year had performed entirely based on his never-give-up spirit. This was the first time that the Ryder Cup was held in Illinois. Europe competed with the cup holders, having won in 2010, to regain it.
