PGA National’s Champion Course has a reputation for being one of the toughest tests in golf, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to shoot low scores. In fact, the course has seen its fair share of impressive rounds over the years, including Tiger Woods’s final-round 62 at the 2012 Honda Classic. However, the course record is actually held by Brian Harman, who shot an incredible 61 in the same tournament. Harman’s round was a masterclass, and he would have broken 60 had he made a five-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole.

Harman’s record-breaking round was all the more impressive given that it eclipsed the previous course record, set by Davis Love III just a day earlier, by three shots. What’s more, it would take nine years for another player to match Harman’s score, a testament to just how special his round was. Despite not winning the tournament, Harman’s 61 will always be remembered as one of the greatest rounds in PGA National’s history. However, recently, young golfer Jake Knapp also showed what he’s made of by breaking the course record at PGA National with an unbelievable 59.

The jaw-dropping 59 (-12) in the opening round marked the 15th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history and the first-ever sub-60 score shot in the state of Florida! To put that in perspective, his incredible round would have been enough to win or tie for the win in 17 of the last 24 Honda Classics – talk about setting the bar high! “Jake Knapp’s opening round of -12….. Ties or beat the winning score in 17 of the last 24 Honda Classics. Insane”, wrote Monday Q Info on X.

Matt Jones equals the PGA National Course record

In the 2021 Honda Classic, Matt Jones achieved something truly special – he equaled Brian Harman’s course record at PGA National with a stunning 61. What’s even more impressive is that he did it in windy conditions, navigating the challenging course with ease and carding nine birdies without a single bogey. His incredible round left him three shots clear of the field, a remarkable achievement that set the tone for the rest of the tournament. The fact that he beat the field’s first-round scoring average by 10 strokes is a testament to his exceptional skill and strategy on the course.

What’s your perspective on:

Does Brian Harman's 61 still hold legendary status after Jake Knapp's stunning 59 at PGA National?

Have an interesting take?

Jones, now a part of LIV Golf, couldn’t quite replicate the brilliance of his first round, but his consistent play over the remaining three rounds was enough to secure his second PGA Tour win. With scores of 70, 69, and 67, he finished a comfortable six shots ahead of the field, capping off an impressive victory at the 2021 Honda Classic. Jones’s win was a result of his ability to maintain a high level of play throughout the tournament, even when faced with challenging conditions and stiff competition. His record-equalling first round will be remembered as one of the highlights of the tournament. What are your favorite moments from the history of amazing records, that too in this course?
