Did the Canadian crowd rattle Team USA, or was it just an off day for Furyk and Scheffler?

Team USA had a scintillating 5-0 scoreboard when they entered the Friday round at the Presidents Cup. However, things quickly started to drop as the International Team took up momentum. The American squad could not card any holes, resulting in a tie after the foursome round (5-5).

But well, was it the International team that caught up, or was the American team distracted? Looks like it was the latter. Scottie Scheffler at the post-round presser had complained about how the loud Canadian crowd cheering for the team greatly distracted them as they teed off. Looks like the captain pretty much has the same reason.

At the post-round presser on Friday, Jim Furyk was asked about the team’s terrible performance, and how most of them were beaten at the foursomes. To this, the American Skipper reiterated what he had earlier stated in other interviews that day. “They’re going to come out firing.” However, he went on to add that the entire American squad was a little pissed due to what happened on Friday.

Additionally, Furyk said that the team would come firing back on Saturday to once again take the lead. But, “We’re going to face a loud crowd again, it’s the weekend”, he said, citing his concern. They had a terrible first tee experience, and he was certain that it would be the same on Saturday. He also added that he, of course, loved having the crowd cheer for them rather than the International team.

“I sure liked it a lot better when I saw a lot of red on the board rather than a lot of gold, but we have to do the same thing. We have to just kind of — I’m sure there’s going to be some guys that stand up in our room today and have some stuff to say about what they saw on the golf course,” added Furyk. Most people have always been cheering for the American squad every year. However, this time with such heavy support, the Friday round was a celebration for their opponent.

The crowd inspired Corey Conners

This is the first time that the International team has so many Canadians on board. With the increased number, more people are rooting for them in the partisan galleries at the Royal Montreal Golf Club. Although a lot of the commentators and players called it ‘not particularly nice’, it was a surprise for the International Team. The entire crowd was exceptionally loud and out in full force on the second round.

“I would say the crowd was in it from the get-go for us. We were aware of some of the big cheers ahead of us knowing that some of the guys were winning holes,” said Corey Conners. He was paired with Mackenzie Hughes to lead the Day 2 with a 6-5 victory over Wyndham Clark and Tony Finau. He also added that he would love to have some more cheers for the remaining days.
