Nicolas Echavarria swung the club for the first time at just two years of age. Ever since then, his father and grandfather have supported him on his journey to professional golf. 28 years later, Echavarria is going head-to-head with some of the world’s best in the 2025 Valspar Championship. At the end of the penultimate round, he finished tied at the top with Viktor Hovland and two strokes ahead of Justin Thomas. This isn’t the first time Echavarria has led the field. Despite the inconsistent performance, one thing that has always remained constant is that the 30-year-old will give a top-flight performance after every few events. He had three top-10 finishes in 2024 including the 2024 ZOZO Championship win. Echavarria has also secured a runners-up finish at the Sony Open in 2025.

With so many great performances, fans have been eager to learn more about him. Especially his background and other aspects of his life. Well, we’re here to explore one of those aspects; his ethnicity.

Nicolas Echavarria completed his education at the University of Arkansas. Yes, he has studied in the Natural State, just like his brothers, Miguel and Andres. Echavarria himself took up a major in International Relations and graduated from the University of Arkansas in 2017. He soon turned pro and played in many different Tours. For the 2022-23 season, Echavarria received his PGA Tour card after dominating the Korn Ferry Tour in 2022. He also won his first PGA Tour title, the Puerto Rico Open in 2023. This may suggest that Nicolas Echavarria might be American. But that is not the case.

The two-year-old Echavarria had his first swing at a golf club in Medellin, Colombia. That is his birthplace and where he spent the majority of his youth. Echavarria has also represented Colombia on a number of occasions. He was the face of the country in the 2016 Eisenhower Trophy. Echavarria also played for Columbia in the 2024 Paris Olympics golf tournament. While he may have settled down in the USA, he is undoubtedly extremely proud of his Colombian heritage. Interestingly, when he turned pro in 2017 he first played in the PGA Tour Latinoamerica.

Nicolas Echavarria’s love for Colombia

Soon after getting his PGA Tour card, Nicolas Echavarria had one of the biggest moments in his life. He captured the Puerto Rico Open in 2023. And he celebrated his victory by raising the Colombian flag above his shoulders with the trophy sitting beside him in a picturesque moment. Only a year later, Echavarria received the opportunity to bring pride to his country again at the Paris Olympics. After the tournament was concluded, the Colombian shared a slideshow of pictures with the caption “Proud to represent these colors 🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴.” The Colombian flag was featured in nearly all of the pictures in the carousel.

The Colombian citizens also consider Nicolas Echavarria as a figure of national pride. He was featured in a Colombian magazine cover alongside his partner, Claudia De Antonio. The magazine is called ‘¡HOLA! Colombia’ and the cover picture can be found on their Instagram page as well.
