Without a policy board, the PGA Tour would have had much trouble sailing smoothly. However, that aspect is thoroughly kept under check with regular changes as per requirements and inspections among the board members. There has been much commotion about Tiger Woods as a player director without a term length ever since this January.
The PGA Tour officially published the list of the 2024 Player Advisory Council, which included 16 council members along with the chairman, Camilo Villegas, who would serve for the remaining 2024 season. Following his tenure as council chairman, the Colombian golfer will replace Jordan Spieth as Player Director on January 1, 2025, and serve a three-year term (2025–27). It has been noticed that all the directors of the Player Advisory Council have a three-year term.
According to the Player Handbook and Tournament Regulations, which were revised in December 2022, the Player Directors’ number on the PGA Tour Policy Board increased from four to five. Along with that, they initially stated, “The Player Directors will appoint a fifth Player Director to serve a one-year term beginning January 1, 2023.” It was said, “Thereafter, the current Player Directors would appoint a fifth Player Director for the standard three-year term beginning January 1, 2024.”The system was introduced to ensure that “no more than two Player Directors would be rolling off the Policy Board at one time.”

Both Patrick Cantlay and Adam Scott’s terms are from 2024–26, while Peter Malnati and James Frederick would be on board till 2025. Webb Simpson, who previously expressed his desire to step down from his position to spend more time with his family, is still within his tenure until 2025. Rory McIlroy has been denied his return to the board just because some people were “uncomfortable.”

The questionable absence of Woods’s term length and now Rory McIlroy’s rejection before Webb Simpson’s completion of term length bring about this inquiry. Simpson offered to step down if McIlroy would have taken his place, but any outgoing Player Director does not hold the authority to name his replacement. The decision is taken via voting.
Now, if McIlroy wishes to be on the policy board again to speed up the $3 billion merger, he has to wait for a director’s term to end, and then he can be let in if he gets enough votes. But how does McIlroy truly feel about Simpson being cemented in his position?

The Northern Irishman noted that Simpson is comfortable with his position as director and might continue with that. About the golfer’s position, McIlroy comfortably said, “I think he’s got a really balanced voice in all of this, and I think he sees the bigger picture, which is great.” He showed his happiness about Webb Simpson not quitting earlier than his term length for his sake. He stated, “Yeah, I’m really happy that Webb has made that decision to stay on and serve out the rest of his term.”
