A golf tournament usually involves players starting their rounds at different tee times. Thus, it is done to avoid overcrowding on the course and allows for the smooth conduct of a tournament. However, a more holistic method has come up in golf called the Shotgun Start.

All you need to know about the shotgun start in golf
The relatively modern format of starting an event helps all the participants in an event play on the golf course simultaneously. Players start from different holes on the layout, but they all tee off simultaneously. Moreover, the groups in different holes get to know that the event begins through a shotgun that is fired using a pistol, and as a result, it has got its name. At the same time, the starters also use hooters to notify players that the event has started, or the participants quickly check the time on their watches or see other groups teeing off to understand what the time is.
The main advantage of this format is that it allows roughly all players to finish their respective rounds at the same time. Also, it can come in handy if the event involves a prize ceremony or meals after the tournament ends, as all the players will reach the clubhouse roughly at the same time.
Moreover, the shotgun start format is suitable during winter days, when the days are short, or when the events take place in less light available in the evenings. All the participants play the full 18 holes. However, they rotate on the golf course depending on the hole they teed off. If a group starts on the 12th hole on the back nine, they will end their round of 18 holes on the 11th green.

The new rival tour, LIV Golf Invitational Series, includes 48 players’ fields and will commence using a shotgun start to ensure the timely completion of the tournaments. In the reverse shotgun start, the main idea is to clear the first tee timely. As a result, the event starts on the first or the 18th hole, and then competitors play accordingly. Is it a helpful format?

Do players use a cart in this format?
Generally, players hop in a cart to get to their starting hole and tee off on time. However, using a golf buggy throughout the round is not a requirement. Players will usually drive their cart to the starting hole, take out their bags, and walk alone or with their caddies. In the end, the shotgun format effectively reduces the time in an event. Do you think PGA Tour should too opt for this method?
