Does Lydia Ko's marriage to a Hyundai heir add pressure or provide more freedom in her golf career?

Lydia Ko continues to dominate the greens, but a big part of her success can be attributed to her husband, Jun Chung. Earlier this month, Ko shared how he was at the Old Course in St.Andrews for the AIG Women’s British Open. He woke up at 4 a.m. to watch her compete. “I’m very thankful that he’s taking a step back and doing things on my time, and I know that’s not easy, so I’m glad that he’s actually getting to enjoy it,” she shared. What’s surprising is that Jun Chung has been here for Ko despite huge responsibilities; thanks to his line of work.

Chung completed his high school at Seoul International School and later attended Claremont McKenna College. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and is a multi-talented individual.

Jun Chung is the son of the vice-chairman and CEO of the prominent Hyundai Card and currently manages the finances of the company. He has been an Open Innovation Associate for the Hyundai Cradle before that.

As per reports from Forbes, his family’s net worth is $14.8 billion, and the Chung Family was named the 2017 richest family in Asia. Not only that, Lydia Ko’s husband also has knowledge of UX design, strategy and business development, and app development, and despite coming from an ultra-rich family, he has spent a decent amount of time working as a part-time employee.

It is indeed true that Chung’s talents and family net worth are amazing, but when it comes to supporting his wife, he never backs down. After the conclusion of the second round of the 2024 AIG Women’s Open, Ko spoke in a press conference about the sacrifices her husband has made for her.

“I feel bad because he’s having to wake up at 4:00 a.m. with me this morning. Even if I am the most supportive wife when it comes to his work, I’m probably never going to wake up at 4:00 a.m. for him for his job,” said the 27-year-old.

Ko not only continues to amaze fans with her performances, much like she did at the Olympics, but she also has a unique approach when it comes to love and relationships. Typically, it’s the guy who takes the first step in confessing his feelings, but in Ko’s case, she was the one who made the first move in an interesting way. Yes, you read that right!

The couple first met back in 2020 on a blind date. However, their first date worked out they developed a mutual liking and continued their relationship for the next two years.

Then in 2022, Lydia Ko proposed to Chung in her unique “golf” way. She talked about it and said, “So I did it very golf-like. I wrote on golf balls, ‘Will you marry me?’” on golf balls. The last one had room for him to circle “yes” or “no”. Well, Chung obviously said yes to the golfer’s proposal, and they tied the knot at the Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul, South Korea, on December 30, 2022.

Now the couple are living happily together, becoming each other’s constant source of support. “I’ve got a lot to thank him for and he’s I think my number … I call him my No. 1 supporter but he said my mum and my sister, and like my direct family are my No. 1 supporter,” she shared in 2023.

What’s more, the couple even play golf together when there are no tournaments going on for Lydia Ko.
