If there was a competition for being the most supportive husband, John Pond would likely take the top prize. Leaving behind his job to caddie for his wife, Lauren Coughlin, Pond has proven himself to be the ultimate partner, on and off the course. He has been with Coughlin through thick and thin, truly.

The LPGA golfer was taken by surprise when her husband told her that he wanted to be her caddie. But she knew that her husband was the perfect fit. She values her husband’s presence on the course; according to her, he has a calming influence that keeps her relaxed and calm. He also helps prevent her from getting too far ahead of herself. “There’s no one who knows me better than him, so just kind of keeping me cool and relaxed out there,” she said, according to Golf.com. But having him as her full-time caddie was not a piece of cake. 

Pond made some major sacrifices to be with Coughlin on the greens. Pond left his job as a fundraiser at the University of Virginia (UVA) to become her full-time caddie. The cherry on top was Pond’s athletic background. Having played football at UVA from 2011 to 2015 as a center and special team player, Pon played a crucial role in forming Coughlin’s gameplay. But what was the process behind Pond becoming her Caddie? Well, it was a long one!

The couple had to go through a 3-week trial to be sure that they were a good fit. Their journey began at Palos Verdes, with Coughlin giving him a chance to prove himself. “Okay, I’ll give you these three weeks. I’ll know after three weeks if we can do it,” she said, recalling a conversation he had with Pond. And Pond proved himself to be the best caddie she ever had. John Pond, her boyfriend at the time, dropped to one knee and popped the question, “Will you marry me?”
