Is Matt Kuchar's move at the Wyndham Championship the most selfish act in recent golf history?

The Wyndham Championship faced roadblocks from the start. Bad weather led to delays, and the withdrawal of some players further complicated things. There were worries that the tournament might not finish by Sunday, but it wrapped up as scheduled—except for one pro, Matt Kuchar. The tournament was already finished as Aaron Rai claimed his first-ever PGA Tour title at this season’s regular finale.

Kuchar decided not to finish his final round on Sunday and CBS on-course reporter Dottie Pepper relayed the decision of the pro saying “Matt Kuchar has said he won’t play any more golf today.” Witnessing this, analysts like Trevor Immelman questioned his decision, noting that the horn had not been blown for darkness.

Meanwhile, another rules official, Orlando Pope, stated that it was already past sunset. Instead of blowing a horn, they directly informed Kuchar, along with the other two players in the final group, Max Greyserman and Chad Ramey. Although Greyserman and Ramey finished their rounds Matt Kuchar was the only one remaining to complete the tournament.

Explaining his reasons for not playing Kuchar said to Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis “I was trying to set an example for Max, We were so far past when we should’ve stopped playing. We saw what Max did on hole 16; they should’ve blown the hole there. I feel bad, the poor kid should’ve won this tournament. By me not playing, it may show Max he has an important shot to hit, “ as revealed on the Sports Yahoo website.

No matter what the reason was for the decision, it shocked people. One of the CBS broadcasters joked, “I don’t expect we’re going to be bringing you that coverage tomorrow.” Indeed, it did not happen as the TV coverage did not return for the morning. He returned to the greens on Monday at 8:00 a.m. and played his last hole, and made par. He finished at T12. The news of the tournament’s conclusion was shared on X by NUCLRGOLF.

Not long after the post went viral on X, fans started bashing the golfer with negative comments and calling him selfish. Most of them were frustrated witnessing the golfer’s decision to extend the tournament and stretching it to Monday. Meanwhile, some thought it was all about money that he chose not to complete his final round on Sunday.

One fan outright labeled the golfer as selfish, exclaiming, “Selfish Entitled M——–r!” If Kuchar had finished his round on Sunday with a birdie, he would have won $223,833 and secured 7th place. However, making a bogey would have decreased both his winnings and his position. To play it safe, Matt Kuchar opted for a Monday finish, earning $134,695 on Monday. This fan believed Kuchar’s decision was all about money, and the golfer wasn’t thinking about anything else.

Not exactly talking about money, but his decision another fan added, “What an a-hole.” There were already a lot of concerns around the Wyndham Championship. First, the delays because of the weather, then the withdrawal of pros—all of it ruined the experience for the fans, and there were also chances of a Monday finish. However, still, the PGA Tour still managed to complete all the rounds by Sunday, but the decision by Kuchar forced it to a Monday finish in a very unexpected way.

The 46-year-old was called a “Nice Guy” back in 2019 and is one of the most popular pros for his consistency on the greens. Alluding to that, this fan added, “Matt Kuchar can no longer be known as the nice, light-hearted guy on TOUR,” considering the golfer decided to finish his round on Monday and selfishly did nothing but ruin his own reputation and fan base. Expressing similar sentiments, another added, “He accomplished decreasing his fan base.”

One fan took Matt Kuchar’s achievements into account and commented, “He just replaced all his achievements with this one bonehead move. This one will go down in history, not just in golf lore but in bizarre behavior lore. The kind of stuff you see in Ripley’s museum.” The golfer has played in more than 550 events and has nine PGA Tour victories. Aside from that, he also has 62 top-5 finishes and 16 third-place finishes. His impressive streak of 17 straight FedEx Cup playoff appearances also ended this year. However, this fan believes none of it matters; now the golfer has forced the Wyndham Championship to finish on Monday.
