Is Scottie Scheffler too hard on himself, or is this what makes him a top golfer?

The world no. 1 recently reflected on his performance at the 2024 Presidents Cup Saturday’s round. Scottie Scheffler is known for his clutch performances and fans have rarely seen the golfer go to the 18th hole without making a birdie. When asked about his performance on Saturday, the golfer was embarrassed to admit that he lost his signature calm and composure on the greens.

Scheffler said he was getting a bit impatient when he was moving up to the 16th hole, having made no birdies. He hoped that his teammate Collin Morikawa would come to his rescue. “I was getting a little bit impatient out there and I’m standing there on 15 green thinking to myself, what am I doing, and just hoping Collin can knock that putt in, and that was huge for our team there. It really was”, said reflecting on his performance in the post-round interview.

Despite feeling impatient, Scheffler gained momentum when his dear teammate sunk a crucial putt on the 15th green. Scheffler then took charge and scored back-to-back birdies. However, the golfer thinks he cannot speak ‘highly’ of his performance today. “Can’t speak highly enough of that putt, and gave us some confidence going into the last two holes, and I was able to make a couple birdies when my partner needed me because he was a bit alone out there for a while today, so I was proud to step up when I needed to.”

This incident was surprising to many as fans took to X to express their views. No Laying Up on X made a critical point by saying, “Scottie really is putting the finishing touches on a Tiger-like season by not being good in the team event”. And this fan even said that Scheffler may end up on a bench because of his performance, “Scottie Scheffler has not made a birdie through 15 holes in match play best ball. Does Jim Furyk sit him down for Saturday afternoon foursomes?”

Scheffler did accept that he was bit off his game in a way. Had it anything to do with the debacle that went down with one of his best friends?

Scottie Scheffler had a rather heated exchange at the Presidents Cup

The incident occurred when Tom Kim celebrated a crucial birdie putt enthusiastically, prompting Scottie Scheffler to respond similarly after sinking his birdie to halve the hole, and chant, “What was that?”  Kim made headlines after sinking a long birdie putt at the eighth green and walking off to the ninth tee before Scheffler took his shot, and he gained a lot of backlash for it.

Kevin Kisner expressed his disapproval, saying, “They took gamesmanship too far and over the line on sportsmanship and lose some integrity. I thought it was pretty bush league and I told Camilo that if that’s the way they want to do it, then game on. If you can p**s off my No. 1 player in the world, then I’m all for it”, he said.

Sky Sports golf reporter Paul McGinley labeled the incident “disrespectful.” Kim defended his actions, insisting not watching Scheffler’s putt didn’t affect play and he was focused on his game. He said, “He’s (Scheffler) a good friend. But at the same time, this week I don’t like him. I want to beat him so bad, and I’m sure he feels the same way.” Scheffler appeared unbothered and understood Kim’s perspective. So, we can say that the exchange didn’t impact Scheffler’s performance.
