More than a year back, when golfers shifted to the relatively new LIV Golf league, they were met with their own share of drawbacks. While the financial aspect was sound, participation in the league did not allow the players to gather points on the OWGR. These points, as most of us know, are crucial for qualifying for the majors if the golfer does not fall under the exemption criteria.

One such player who fits this description is the LIV defector, Sergio Garcia. The golfer last won a major in year 2017 which took him away from any exemption. Hence, as a LIV golfer, he must look for other outlets to qualify for major tournaments. One such method is the qualifier event, and that is exactly what Garcia has been involved in before the last major of the season. Moreover, he seems to be in his element!

An excellent first-round spell for Sergio Garcia

July 4th marked the entry of Spaniard Garcia in the qualifying round for the British Open. Currently, he is among the 21 LIV Golf individuals who will be vying for the 16 spots left to be filled for the last major of the season. Each of the four final qualifying venues will offer four spots to the professionals.

While the list consists of both amateur and professional golfers, Garcia’s aim will be to conquer a spot and move to the main event. That is exactly what the first round looked like for the professional. As per the tweet by NUCLR GOLF, the commencement of the qualifiers has been strong for Garcia with a 5 under par.

As a matter of fact, since 1998, the Spaniard has played at every British Open, missing only two of the major events— the 2020 Masters and the 2023 PGA Championship. Graeme McDowell, Mito Pereira, and Scott Vincent, his LIV golf mates, will join him at the West Lancashire Golf Club in England.

Garcia’s current standings in the OWGR at the 219th spot, might have dented the golfer’s chance of participating in the tournament. His hope though remains on the massive opportunity created through the qualifiers. This, however, was a repetitive fate as the golf star already had crossed paths with a qualifier round for a major championship.

Not the first time Garcia is in the qualifiers

It was just about a few weeks back when Sergio Garcia was participating in the US Open 2023 qualifiers. This was in order to grab a seat in the huge championship. He had gone ahead and informed his awaiting fans of his qualification with the tweet, “24th Consecutive,” referring to his incredible record of appearances on the US Open ground.

This update was a relief to the viewers after the star missed out on the PGA Championship just weeks prior to it. But the golfer did not let this break hinder his confidence and preparation. His comeback in the US Open stood as proof of his efforts, with him ending the tournament at T27.

His closure to the previous event would have the fans hoping for a great Open Championship. Not only the fans, but the whole golf world would be on an outlook for the Spanish golfer to take the qualifying berth and tame the Royal Liverpool Golf Club.
