The end of August is fast approaching and the deadline to finalize the fine print of the $3 Billion framework agreement is closing in. The merger among the three influential golfing circuits, namely the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf was announced on 6th June with the addendum that by December 31st all the details will be ironed out to determine if the framework agreement becomes a reality.

There have been several professional golfers who have actively advocated against it, stating their consternations and calling out the policy board for the hurried decision. The merger announcement came as a betrayal of legacy to PGA Tour loyalist Tiger Woods. PGA Tour pro Rory McIlroy, has also been vocal in the past about his distaste for the Saudi-backed Tour. He recently explained Woods’ role in the merger during a presser.

As the Tour Championship, the final event of the FedEx Cup playoffs, is about to commence, the three-time winner of the event sat down with the reporters and the conversation strayed from the event at hand to the future of the PGA Tour. The media queried if the votes from player directors, including Tiger Woods who was recently appointed, must be undivided.

The Northern Irishman explained that the six Player Directors need not have congruence but a majority of votes will do. He did, however, go on to explain how Tiger Woods has been very impactful on the board. His heightened engagement to identify the best possible solution for the players on the Tour is motivating everyone. “I think his difference has been felt already,” said the 34-year-old golfer.

As the terminal details for the merger are under inspection, Woods’ influence is largely affecting the outcome. “His presence on there will only continue to grow as we head towards that December 31st deadline,” McIlroy added.

The PGA Tour has been trying to incorporate some new rules along with a calendar schedule that hasn’t been in practice for ages. One of the new alterations was introducing the no-cut rule. However, Tiger Woods wasn’t having it. He loves the traditional gameplay, and as a compromise, the policy board and the 82-time PGA Tour winner along with Jack Nicklaus, came to an agreement.

The new stigma is that the signature events hosted by the legends of the sport will continue to implement the ‘cut rule’ while other events will most likely adhere to the new norms. Woods is exercising his influence on the policy board quite splendidly to arrive at good decisions that will help the players and the association continue their venture in harmony.
