Despite his struggles, Tiger Woods had managed to elicit hope in fans after making a record-tying 23rd cut at the Masters last month. But their expectations were just as quickly vanquished as he withdrew from the event midway due to aggravated plantar fasciitis.
Days later, the golf world received another huge update regarding his health. The 15-time major winner revealed on Twitter that he had undergone subtalar fusion surgery to address post-traumatic arthritis in his right leg, an issue that had persistently bothered him since his unfortunate car accident in 2021. The golfer also added that he would take some time away from the sport to recuperate after his procedure. And now the tragedy continues!
As per the latest reports, the 47-year-old golfer will also be sitting out of next month’s US Open as he continues to recover from his surgery in his $54 million Jupiter Island mansion. Woods has previously made 22 appearances at the major, winning the coveted title three times: in 2000, 2002, and 2008.

The USGA released the news about Woods’ withdrawal on Monday, undoubtedly leaving many in the golf world disappointed. They further disclosed the names of 33 more golfers who had been added to the roster for the major. The US Open will take place less than a month from now, from June 15 to 18. The site of this year’s third major is the Los Angeles Country Club in California.

While Tiger Woods’ latest ankle procedure was a success, post-surgery rehabilitation can take a significant amount of time. Per a report from the Cleveland Clinic, it takes around 6 to 12 weeks post-surgery to be able to put weight on the ankle. Following this, the golfer can start walking around in a boot, and only after that can he begin steadily working toward returning to form. The FootcareMD site further reveals that the boot stays in place for around 8 to 12 weeks, sometimes even longer.
So, is a full-fledged comeback possible for the PGA Tour pro? Nima Heidar, a foot and ankle surgeon and consultant, believes so. “There’s no reason why he can’t be absolute top of the game again,” he shared in an interview with Golf Monthly last month. “There’s two things about him which are incredible. One of them is him. And there’s no substitute for his hunger and his desire to be the best and to continue to be the best and to win.” Heidar had also pointed toward the extraordinary team of experts that the golfer surrounds himself with and who can facilitate his return to the game.
