LIV Golf has not only changed the golf world spectrum but has also altered many friendships in some major ways. The most recent development has come about in Webb Simpson’s view of Dustin Johnson’s legacy when the latter chose to talk about the LIV Departures with what appeared to be a heavy heart.

Despite being extremely close through the years, Simpson chose to get real and served his longtime friend with a reality check. He revealed how he doubts that Johnson’s legacy might or might not be the same in the coming years. Even though he said that it might remain unchanged, he still made sure to communicate his reservations.

Webb Simpson said, “I love Dustin (Johnson); he’s a buddy of mine, but he had the opportunity to go down as one of the top 10 greatest players ever, and as soon as he signed his name to LIV, he still could be, but in the record books, we’ll never know. It’s not going to count. Things like that make me a little sad.”

Although Simpson brutally conveyed his bold opinion, he also made sure to convey that his words were not an attempt to knock LIV Golfers down. He termed it as a difference in their opinion and possibly even age. He added, “But I’m not knocking the guys for going. I just think these young guys think about it different, you know.”

Continuing his approach of recognizing and addressing differences, Simpson’s recent take also grabbed the eye of keen golf fans. His stance translated into the famous pro-backing Jay Monahan, amidst the ongoing merger tensions.

In a display of his empathy for these key position holders, he said, “A deal of this magnitude and what we’re talking about is so complex. Different people have different desires, and we’ve got to work through them. We’ve got SSG, we’ve got PIF, we’ve got so many players, and it just takes time.” Questions about the merger being delayed have been thrown around everywhere in the golf world, and the pro gave a decent explanation as to what might have caused the delay and showed much-needed support to the Tour Commissioner.

While Simpon has his share of doubts about the Saudi-funded league being a threat to the traditional Tour, he has proved that he does not hold a grudge against LIV Golf or the LIV golfers. As mostly everyone on the PGA Tour’s side slowly gets on board with the idea of a merger, only time will tell what will happen to the ‘legacy’ in question.
