Everything was going as planned at the Farmers Insurance Open until Mother Nature decided to play its card. And boom, here we are with (yet another) a delayed round. After a smooth sailing first round, the PGA Tour announced that round 2 was suspended due to high winds. Now, golf and weather have a tricky relationship, for the latter can quickly turn play into a nightmare. Joel Dahmen summed it up perfectly, calling it “survival mode.”
Naturally (yes, we see the pun there), this isn’t the first time the weather has thrown a wrench into the PGA Tour. It’s always frustrating for players and fans when momentum gets derailed like this. And here are the top 5 of such times:
1. 2024 Puerto Rico Open got delayed:

The 2024 Puerto Rico Open faced a chaotic start thanks to some wild weather. The first round was repeatedly interrupted, with rain forcing officials to evacuate players for safety. Fans were kept in the loop, via the PGA Tour’s tweets. “With weather at the Puerto Rico Open taking a turn for the worse, players are now being removed from the course to seek shelter during the delay (began at 2:42pm local time).”
After nearly two hours, the weather felt manageable enough for the game to resume at 4:37 PM, leaving fans optimistic about future rounds. But Alas! This hope was short-lived. Just as things started to look up, darkness crept in and put a halt to the round again, leaving most players unable to finish.
2. The 2022 Players Championship
In 2022, at TPC Sawgrass, what started as a promising weekend of golf turned into a weather fiasco. Reason? Heavy rain and thunderstorms hit Northeast Florida severely. By Friday, play was suspended. The course was unplayable. It had become a soggy mess. Saturday morning brought even more problems. The course was completely waterlogged, and finishing on time just wasn’t going to happen.
PGA Tour officials finally decided to push the event to Monday. The ground crews worked overtime to squeeze water off the greens. “Despite grounds staff furiously squeegeeing water from the greens, the persistent precipitation finally conquered the course, and players were forced off at 11:15 a.m. ET,” said Tour at the time.
Nearly 3 inches of rain had fallen in just 48 hours. Even for TPC Sawgrass, one of golf’s most iconic courses, that was too much to handle. It was a frustrating weekend for everyone, but when it comes to weather, there’s only so much you can control!
3. The 2023 Tour Championship suspended during the final round
A whopping $75 million purse was on the line, and the winner was about to get $18 million. It was supposed to be exciting, but it wasn’t. The weather ruined it. For the second day in a row, the Tour Championship had to be suspended during the final round because of “inclement weather.”
A storm was there, just west of East Lake, and with lightning close by, officials had no choice but to pull the players off the course. The day before, a similar storm delay hit around 5:30 p.m. ET, and play didn’t resume for over an hour because another storm cell appeared nearby.
By Sunday, the weather just refused to cooperate—rain and thunderstorms kept coming, making it less about golf and more about waiting for the weather to clear. The tournament finally wrapped up, but it’ll always be remembered as the one where the weather had the starring role.
4. 2024 Wyndham Championship delay due to tropical storm
Tropical Storm Debby decided to make its grand entrance right when the 2024 Wyndham Championship, the regular-season finale, was set to take place. And let’s just say, the timing couldn’t have been worse. With up to eight inches of rain expected over the first two days and wind gusts reaching 25-30 mph, it was clear that trying to play golf in those conditions would be a nightmare.
So, the Tour made the call to keep fans off the grounds for safety, and they had to postpone the first round. They didn’t even schedule the first tee time until 3 p.m. ET on Thursday, August 15, 2024—just to make sure everyone was safe while the storm passed through.

5. 2024 Shriners Children’s Open suspended due to high winds
The 2024 Shriners Children’s Open experienced serious wind. Gusts were up to 50 mph! That led to a four-hour delay on Friday, October 18, 2024. But that wasn’t even the first hiccup of the week. The first round got suspended the night before because it got too dark to keep playing.
The round was then rescheduled for 6:55 a.m. on Friday, but as soon as those winds took charge, the delay kept getting pushed back—first by two hours, then by four. PGA Tour Chief Referee Stephen Cox decided to delay, saying it was all about keeping everyone safe—players, staff, volunteers, and spectators at TPC Summerlin.

While things like the pace of play and TV coverage can be worked around, weather like this is a whole different beast. As golfers, though, we just roll with it.
