Earlier this month, the entire golf world was in a state of shock as the PGA Tour announced one of its most landmark decisions yet. The PGAT announced that they are merging with the Saudi Public Investment Fund along with the DP World Tour. And while many openly retaliated against the merger, just as many stood on the other side, welcoming it with open arms.

One among those who are more than glad for the $3 billion merger is none other than the Irish LIV star, Graeme McDowell. He recently even gave his two cents on the unison of golf and voiced how joyous he was, especially after the sport had been “fractured” for so long!

When the Saudi League was introduced in 2022, it had a lot of impact on the sport. The league almost tore apart men’s golf and ended many long-term friendships. Not just this, but the sport’s fans all across the globe were divided as well. With this merger news, the main aim was to unify the sport again, put the sport above everything, and work for its development.

Graeme McDowell, who is the only golfer of Irish descent to defect over to the LIV side, has expressed his thoughts about the amalgamation that shocked the entire golf fraternity. Expressing his thoughts about how prompt this merger decision has been, he said that everyone expected this to be in the cards, but nobody thought it would happen so soon.

Sharing his thoughts before LIV Golf’s $25 million Valderrama event about what the merger will mean for the sport, he said to Irish Golfer, as per a recent report, “Most importantly, it’s great for the game going forward.  We are all excited about it, what it means for the sport.” He claimed that the merger is just going to be the reunion of all the best golfers who were once divided by the thought of competing in different leagues and tours.

“I don’t think any LIV player ever wanted to be seen to be fracturing the game, and in the way, we have seen it fractured in the last 12 months,” he said, commenting on what was not the motive of LIV golfers. “Like I say, we can only speculate, but the most important thing is that the game of golf is in a better place moving forward for everybody.”

During his interview, the 4-time PGA Tour winner shared that everyone at the Saudi-funded league is super excited about the future of the sport and what this union will bring forth. He shared that he doubts if anyone, including the top-tier decision-makers, even knows the definite terms of the contract yet. “I don’t think anyone knows what it means.  I am not even sure that the decision-makers at the very, very tip of the spear have worked out what it all means.”

He added that it would take around 12–18 months to figure out every detail of this amalgamation, as the list of items to be addressed is long.
