Ever since he turned pro in 2007, Rory McIlroy has enjoyed the pleasure of being a prominent name in the golf world. Versed with the taste of tour titles and the top spot in the ranking table, the Irish star has achieved massive success in his continuing career. Hoping to reciprocate the same success in his personal life, he once dated former tennis star, Caroline Wozniacki.

The two started dating in 2011. Enjoying their time like any other sporting couple, McIlroy and Wozniacki regularly accompanied each other during golf and tennis events. One such incident took place in 2012 when Wozniacki faced Maria Sharapova in a tennis match.

2010-2012 were undoubtedly the biggest years of Wozniacki‘s tennis career. With her impressive game in place, the Danish star sailed over other players to take the top spot in the WTA rankings. However, walking on the same path, a player who was constantly challenging her for the top spot was Russian sensation, Maria Sharapova.

Taking time off from the pro tour, in 2012, the two faced each other in an exhibition match, ‘BNP Paribas Showdown’. While fans enjoyed the clash of the two, they reserved their loudest cheer for Wozniacki’s surprise.

Into the match, Wozniacki invited McIlroy, who was sitting in the stands, to step on the court. Furthermore, she handed over her racket to him, asking to play a point against the 5-time Grand Slam champion, Sharapova. Despite having a moment of hesitation, McIlroy headed to the baseline, ready to play a point. The two played a 8-shot rally with McIlroy winning after Sharapova hit an out ball.

McIlroy’s win opened doors for a massive cheer by the 18,000 fans gathered in the Madison Square Stadium. The point not only made the golfing sensation outplay Sharapova, but also left a blushing smile on Wozniacki’s face.

The unexpected breakup of McIlroy and Wozniacki

The tennis match was just a one off moment. The relationship of McIlroy and Wozniacki was filled with many such numerous adorable moments. However, not all good things end well.

Dating each other, the two soon announced their engagement. Not delaying further, the two opted to take the next step of getting married. With the preparations in place, Wozniacki and McIlroy were probably enjoying the most special time of their 3-year-long relationship. However, it was the distribution of the wedding cards that came as the turning point in their relationship.

A couple of days after the wedding card distribution, McIlroy called of their wedding. “The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails,” he said. “I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had,” he further added.
