John Daly wins the 1994 Long drive contest
Long John is famous for hitting the golf ball miles down the fairway. He probably has one of the most unorthodox golf swings with his long yet elegant backswing. Even at this age, the two-time major championship winner manages to hit huge bombs off the tee.

Long John featured in a long drive competition back in 1994. He played the contest against Jim Dent. The footage of both the professionals battling is exciting. Not to forget that the longest drive in grind champion would get a whopping $40,000, and the average of 4 the longest drives would get $40,000.

Daly appeared in the long-drive contest at 25, with a lethal Wilson Killer Whale driver with a seven-degree loft. On the other hand, Dent had the Callaway Big Bertha with a nine-degree loft. The competition comprised three rounds of four drives each. After which, a long-drive champion would be crowned. However, one good rule was that both the players would get a mulligan on their first drives. And it was up to them whether they would keep the first drive or choose not to record it.

Jim was first to go and hit his tee shot 318 yards. Daly was up next and smoked his tee shot to 321 yards. However, he decided not to keep his first long drive. After the first round, Dent led as Daly missed the grid in all of his drives. After round two, Daly had the lead with a whopping 340-yard long drive and an average distance of 331 yards. As a result, in the end, he clinched both the longest drive with his 340-yard drive and an average long drive of 337 yards.
Long John after winning the contest
After winning the long drive competition, Daly had something interesting to say about the competition. He said, “The driver, just something that came natural. I’m not out here to really be, try to be a Mike Dunaway or Big Katt Williams, and those guys hit it a long long way. That’s their job. My job is to come out here and play golf and do the best I can.”
