As we are getting closer to the 150th edition of The Open Championship, we go back to a moment from the 2018 Open Championship when Bryson DeChambeau was struggling. But more than the struggle, what caught everybody’s attention was the frustration shown by DeChambeau after his poor shot.

The 2018 Open Championship was held at Carnoustie Golf Links in Angus, Scotland. The Italian, Francesco Molinari won his maiden Major in the event. On the other hand, Bryson DeChambeau had one of his worst Majors performances. It was so bad that he had a meltdown while practicing at the Golf Course.
DeChambeau’s meltdown caught on camera
It is very common for players to have a bad day at work, especially in a sport like Golf, where one blunder can ruin the whole day. DeChambeau was just having one of those days.
In the clip, the Scientist was practicing for the second round after finishing the first with a par over 4. Rather embarrassing, DeChambeau was seen having a meltdown following his poor shot. He almost looked on the verge of bursting into tears throughout the video.

The clip only garnered wide attention a week after the Scottish tournament concluded. DeChambeau received a negative response from the press for his reaction, with many people calling him the “Mad Scientist” for his outburst.
Though DeChambeau’s reaction may seem a little overboard, it is amazing to see how much a player cares about his performance that if it doesn’t go well, it can have a profound effect on them. More importantly, DeChambeau proved how much he has improved by winning the 2020 US Open just two years after the incident.
According to his agent, DeChambeau was having a laugh just ten minutes after the whole incident. Despite the howler, the then 24-year-old managed to make the cut and finished the Major tied to 51 rank.
Bryson DeChambeau blamed his Golf Clubs at The 2021 Open Championship
Three years after his meltdown in Scotland, DeChambeau returned to British soil for the 2021 Open Championship. However, he faced another backlash at the Royal St. George Golf Club after he blamed his Cobra Golf clubs for having poor quality.

Bryson DeChambeau had a poor first round after his 1-over-par 71 and hitting just four of 14 fairways. After the round, DeChambeau was asked about his performance to which he blamed his golf clubs.
DeChambeau replied, “That’s what I said a couple of days ago; if I can hit it down the middle of the fairway, that’s great, but with the driver right now, the driver sucks.” The comment made a lot of people unhappy, including the tour operations manager for Cobra Golf Ben Schomin who said, “It’s just really, really painful when he says something that stupid.”

Bryson DeChambeau apologized for his comments on Instagram just a week after the Major. More importantly, DeChambeau has improved and matured a lot from his past mistakes. It will be exciting to see how DeChambeau measures to the new challenges in the LIV Golf.
