Tiger Woods’ nine-box grid technique
Golf Digest recently covered a complete practice session of the golf legend displaying everything Woods does on the field before a tournament. And in a segment of the video, Woods’ old friend and practice partner, Rob McNamara, opened up about the golfer’s techniques while practicing.
McNamara talked about a unique 9-box grid technique that Woods uses to practice his long shots and tees. According to him, Woods views his shots as going through a grid compiled of nine boxes. He used a reference to the tic-tac-toe grid for the people to better understand the imaginary grid that Woods visualizes.

“Dead center would be the center of the tic-tac-toe circle, and that kind of would be a standard shot”, McNamara said. “One up would be, you know, a little bit higher. Down would be almost a stinger…so he sort of sees windows”. According to him, that is how Woods’ mind works and that is how he envisions each of his shots.

What advice did Woods have for other golfers?
At the end of the video, Woods gave a few pieces of advice to everyone who looks up to him. The golfer said that the most important thing to play amazing golf was to practice everything hard. “It’s not about the easy fix, it’s about spending the time”, Woods said. He also added that the players need to make sure they are enjoying the process.
Huge tournaments are often lost due to the immense pressure on the players. However, with enough practice, and spending enough time to take a moment before every shot, no tournament is impossible to win. Woods said that once a player starts following these steps, the practices and training sessions become a lot easier.
