Rory McIlroy and his insane hits send commentators crazy
While never being heralded as a long-range hitter, McIlroy has quietly gone about adding an essential component to his game. His recent performances have been dominant, which bore fruit as he captured the season-ending 2022 FedEx Cup in August.
Returning to the PGA Tour with the ongoing CJ Cup, the stakes were already high for McIlroy. The 33-year-old hasn’t disappointed yet, with a powerful show on day one placing him at an arm’s distance to the top spot.
But it was a particular tee shot that drove fans and commentators crazy. McIlroy’s drive at a tee shot reached a spectacular speed of 187 mph (miles per hour). The velocity attained was quicker than racecars such as Ford Mustang or BMW M8, which can reach top speeds up to 160 mph and 155 mph, respectively.

Undeniably, the ball covered a lot of distance. Watching the shot in awe, the commentators expressed their admiration while calling it “not fair” for the other golfers. The high velocity of the shot also helped McIlroy gain a significant bounce even after the ball’s first landing, providing him with an easy putter.
McIlroy’s remarkable performances for the World No. 1 spot
The Northern Irishman was already a player to reckon with after his exploits on the DP Tour. However, McIlroy has advanced his game to another level, emerging victorious in 22 PGA titles so far.
With the addition of capable long-range hits, McIlroy has set his sights on capturing the top spot from Scottie Scheffler this weekend. A top 2 rank will be enough for the Brit to scale the summit, provided Scheffler doesn’t rank anywhere near.
As things stand at the Congaree Golf Club, McIlroy looks set to gain the upper hand at the loss of Scheffler. The former is already in the top 5, vying for the title, while the current World No. 1 is still a long way off at the 78-member event.
