Does he scorn at the sight of them, or believe that every golfer is just different? DeChambeau was once split for choice when asked about the importance of numbers in the game. It pitted two great golfers, Dustin Johnson, and Phil Mickelson, against each other’s beliefs, which compelled DeChambeau to be diplomatic.

Bryson DeChambeau has his say between Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson

2020 U.S. Open champ, DeChambeau, fell into the trap during his time on the course with player-influencer Grant Horvat. While riding a cart during rounds, the duo discussed an earlier comment from Phil Mickelson. ‘Lefty’ had reportedly said that “you either got to be really smart or really dumb to play the game,” during an interview with David Feherty in 2017.

Horvat honored DeChambeau with the “smart” tag before moving on to the serious matter. He asked how different someone like Dustin Johnson was, who isn’t as fond of numbers as DeChambeau, from a knowledge-absorbant Mickelson.

“It’s an accurate statement,” DeChambeau said, before pertaining to each’s individual qualities. “Phil definitely wants to know anything and everything. And then you have a guy like Dustin who doesn’t want to know much, but he’s smart enough to know when stuff works and doesn’t work.”

DeChambeau further credited DJ for his work ethic and claimed he was smarter than people’s perceptions. “He’s actually a pretty smart individual. He plays the game real well… He’s smarter than he pulls off,” he said.

How have Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson fared with their different approaches to golf?

Irrespective of their approach, both golfers have fared successfully in their respective careers. It has to be noted, though, that both are on different wavelengths in their golf careers. Mickelson is over 50, which has prompted him to watch his diet and fitness.

On the other hand, Johnson is arguably at the peak of his career. The 38-year-old recently won the individual trophy for most points won in the inaugural LIV Golf Series. The 2-time Major Championship winner isn’t fond of numbers on the course, instead relying on his ability and talent to work his way up.

Different approaches have brought successful results to varying degrees for the duo. But do you agree with DeChambeau’s analysis of Mickelson and Johnson? Let us know what you think in the comments down below.
