It is no surprise that parents influence the lives of their children. Hence, many fathers and mothers have a certain way of parenting, often based on their own experiences. While some want their kids to grow up the way they did, others take an entirely different approach. LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman too has a parenting approach for his children, and once revealed how his own upbringing by his late father influenced it.

Norman had a successful golf career and an even more successful business career later. But his greatest achievements in life will always be his two children. The Shark lost his father last year in October, which undoubtedly highlighted the importance of family for him.

In an interview with Business Jet Traveler in 2020, the Shark opened up about various aspects of his life, including his father, Merv Norman, and two children, Morgan Leigh Norman and Greg Norman Jr. The golf great explained that growing up, his father taught him many values, like “never tell a lie and be true to yourself.”

The two-time major champion added that his father was tough on him because of how he was raised. “He was tough because his dad was really tough on him.” Norman believed that it was a “generational” cycle that had continued, and he didn’t want that for his kids.

“I didn’t want to be that way. I wanted to break the chain, because you don’t want to keep handing that generational [nonsense] down,” he stated. The Australian claimed he made the decision when he only was just 14 or 15 years of age.

The golfer claimed to have made the “conscious decision” to raise his kids differently. He stated that he was very honest with them and began teaching them certain values at a very young age. “Kids are way smarter than what we give them credit for,” said the Saudi-backed series’ CEO.

The shark further suggested that no one should ever undermine their kids because that led to rifts forming between them. He explained, “Don’t underestimate the intelligence of your child because the more you ignore it, the more they are going to rebel and go away from you.” He added that embracing their intelligence made them want to be around you more.
