Alison Lee's shirt-off moment: Just good fun or too much for golf's image?

Team USA is dominating the 2024 Solheim Cup with an 8-4. During the match, Alison Lee carded an 86-yard eagle on the second hole. The moment she did so, her caddie Taylor ‘Shota’ Takara, and her partner Megan Khang’s caddie, took off their shirts amid the course. Almost every person in the greens was left laughing at it.

The pair was asked about the incident at the post-round presser in Gainesville on Saturday. To this, Lee stated that ahead of the second hole, Megan Khang’s looper Jack Fulghum challenged them to card a hole-in-one at the par-4 hole. The caddie had offered $500 to whoever putts the ball with one less stroke.

However, it was not the exchange of money that they wanted. “I said I don’t want your money. I don’t need $500. How about you take your shirt off, and he’s like, yeah, I’ll do it, and he looked over at my caddie, Shota, and he’s like, you’re going to do it,” said Alison Lee, jokingly. She then carded the eagle in five minutes and confessed that it worked as a great motivation. Khang’s caddie did not take a moment to fulfill the challenge. Shota, however, was a little uncomfortable. Nonetheless, he eventually ended up doing so for us.

While this was just a little fun exchange on the course during the match, the golf world did not take it that way. DP World Tour Pro Pablo Larrazabal did not like the show at all. He even wrote, “Shirts off from caddies to celebrate a great shot at the Solheim Cup? The game that I love is going too far the wrong way,” he wrote, utterly upset by what had happened at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.

Looks like it is not the caddies that were the complete source of motivation. Megan Khang’s energy is enough to keep her partner motivated. On Saturday, it was the wild caddie celebration with Khang and Lee, and at the opening round, it was the recreating of a series sequence with the other part of the trio, Nelly Korda.

Nelly Korda and Megan Khang were paired up together on Friday. “Honestly, sometimes you forget you’re playing out there for more than what it is just because we’re having so much fun out there, just chitchatting here and there,” said Zhang after being paired up with her friends on both days. The duo had an amazing opening round. They gave the Americans head into the Saturday round with a 6-2 lead by defeating Georgia Hall and Leona Maguire. Just like the Lee celebrations, the Friday round duo too had their celebratory actions take place.

As Nelly Korda carded a beautiful 20-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole and gave the American team the boost it needed, the friends on course celebrated with a victorious fist pump and a celebratory handshake. Korda came to Khang and recreated the Suite Life of Zack and Cody handshake expressing how happy she was. This is the first time that Team USA has a chance of bagging a win after 2017, and about now, the math looks in their favor. Do you think they will be able to lift the trophy in a few hours?
