The $3 billion merger has been a source of grave concern for the PGA Tour players since its announcement. After being in the dark for months, the players’ patience finally broke, and a couple of months ago they went on to rebel against PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.
Meanwhile, a PGA Tour veteran, who no longer plays on the younger tour but was worried about the changes going on owing to the merger, sent an open letter to Monahan. However, the lack of response from Monahan’s side has irked the 9-time major winner as he voiced his frustration on a podcast.

PGA Tour veteran frustrated over Jay Monahan’s lack of response
When the news of the $3 billion merger broke out, there were some veteran golfers who backed the decision including Jack Niklaus and Gary Player. But on that occasion, their biggest rival Tom Watson, shared a letter addressed to Jay Monahan that expressed concerns of the golfers.
But, he hasn’t received any reply to that letter as of yet. Recently, Watson was a guest on the Five Clubs podcast hosted by Gary Williams. Talking about the letter on the show, Williams said that what he found about the letter is that it wasn’t in the form of a condemnation, but rather an inquiry, a series of questions asking the authorities to make the players more informed.

He further asked Watson if he had any trepidation about the letter. Watson replied, “I had none. This was a complete departure of what I thought the tour where I thought that tour should go. And the sad thing about it, Gary, is that question the questions in that letter have not been answered. Not a single one. We’re waiting for the answers.”
Watson further added that he can’t comment on the matter till he gets the answers. Watson retired from the PGA Tour in 2014 and now plays on the PGA Tour Champions. But his concern for younger colleagues is commendable, as could be seen in his letter to the commissioner.

Through his letter, Watson highlighted the utter confusion of the players in concern about the merger. He questioned the hurried process of the merger along with the implications of the merger on the PGA Tour. Watson also demanded the knowledge of what the stakeholders and players should be expected to sacrifice in the process. He also questioned why the players on board weren’t informed about the deal which was done in utmost secrecy.
