In the last 40 years, no golfer could achieve what Viktor Hovland just did. Even the likes of Tiger Woods could not come closer to starting a season as spectacularly as Hovland did and then maintaining the streak till the end.

After accepting the $12 million defeat from Tiger Woods, Viktor Hovland has outperformed the legendary golfer by achieving a record Woods never managed. Woods has made several historical records on the PGA Tour, but he never started a season with rounds of par or better and maintained such a streak.

Viktor Hovland’s astonishing record of staying under par

Viktor Hovland did what nobody could do since 1983. The Norwegian golfers started his 2022-23 season with the ZOZO Championship in Japan with 69-66-64-69. Then at the CJ Cup as well, Hovland scored all rounds under par.

The 26-year-old also carded a 7 under 63 at the TOUR Championship and maintained his streak. Since the beginning of the season, the 2023 FedExCup champion made the streak of hitting par or better.

He kept the streak for 31 rounds and made the record for most consecutive rounds of par or better to start a season since 1983. Woods has achieved the second-best record for overall most consecutive par or better starts (the first is held by Steve Stricker with 53 rounds).

Hovland has made many records this year, as he successfully won two back-to-back events; the BMW Championship and the TOUR Championship, and made it to the PGA Tour win back-to-back starts list. The 31-week consecutive record is not the only example, where Hovland has surpassed Tiger Woods. There is another record that the Norwegian etched in the annals of golf’s history that Woods did not.

Viktor Hovland loved the 60s

In 2019, Viktor Hovlnd started playing on the PGA Tour as a rookie. The then 22-year-old made his first in the 60s at the 2019 Rocket Mortgage Classic. He continued sailing through the 3M and the next three events on the Tour. He tied the record for the most consecutive rounds in the 60s held by Bob Estes (17) and then went on to break the same.

Coming to the 2019 CJ Cup in South Korea, Hovland broke the record of Estes by scoring in the 60s during the first and the second rounds and set it to 19 rounds with the scores under in the 60s. He became the only golfer to achieve the feat and holds the record for it till now. In this record as well, Woods falls behind 5 steps back, as he only has 14 streaks on rounds in the 60s.

This year was record-breaking for Hovland, as also earned a near a few million bucks on the PGA Tour thanks to his three victories, various top-10 finishes, and bonuses he acquired throughout the year. What will the 2024 season unfold for Hovland? Will he break his own records or make new ones? Only time will tell.
