“When we were kids, we couldn’t afford golf balls, so we had to make do with coconuts,” Vijay Singh once said. Now, take a second and imagine that. While most of us struggled to hit a decent shot with real golf balls, Singh was out there swinging at coconuts! That kind of dedication is exactly why he became one of golf’s all-time greats.
As Singh turns 62, what better time to reflect on his incredible journey? From his humble beginnings in Fiji to reaching World No. 1, his story is nothing short of legendary. Here are 15 reasons why Vijay Singh is one of golf’s greatest players.

1. Early Life in Fiji
Born in Lautoka, Fiji, in 1963, Singh grew up in a place more famous for beaches than birdies. But golf was in his blood—his dad, an airplane technician and golf instructor, made sure of that. And let’s not forget those coconut practice rounds. Who knew coconuts could help create a major champion?
2. Pro-Life begins
In 1982, Singh took the plunge and turned professional. He had no idea that the road ahead would take him around the world, facing more ups and downs than a rollercoaster.
3. A rough start (Literally)
Now, here’s where things got bumpy. In 1985, Singh was suspended from the Asian Tour over alleged scorecard shenanigans. It could have been the end of his career—but not for Vijay. Instead, he hustled his way back through Africa and Europe, proving that talent, plus sheer stubbornness, is a dangerous combination.
4. PGA Tour Rookie of the Year
By 1993, Singh had made it to the big leagues. He won his first PGA Tour event at the Buick Classic and was crowned PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. That’s what happens when you refuse to quit.
5. Major championship victories
A golfer’s dream? Winning a major. A legend’s move? Winning three. Singh took home the 1998 PGA Championship, the 2000 Masters where he put on the legendary Green Jacket, and the 2004 PGA Championship. Clutch performances when they mattered most!

6. World number one
For five years, Tiger Woods was the guy. From August 15, 1999, to September 4, 2004, Woods did not let anyone come close to his apex spot. Then, in 2004, Singh did the unthinkable—he knocked Woods off his throne and became World No. 1. And not just for a week or two—he held that top spot for 26 weeks. Then in March 2005, Woods took the spot again for two weeks. It was then Singh who overshadowed Woods from March 20 to April 9, and then again from May 22 to June 11 for 3 weeks each time.
So, Singh was on the world’s best golfer for 32 weeks! That alone tells you how dominant he was.
7. Record-breaking season
Speaking of 2004, Singh went bananas that season. Nine PGA Tour wins in one year. NINE! That earned him the PGA Tour and PGA of America Player of the Year honors. Basically, if there was a golf tournament in 2004, chances are Singh won it.
8. Age is just a number
Most golfers slow down after 40. Not Vijay. Instead, he hit turbo mode. He won 22 PGA Tour events after 40, smashing Sam Snead’s record. Who says you can’t teach an old golfer new tricks?
9. Hall of Fame induction
By 2006, Singh’s spot in the World Golf Hall of Fame was official. And if you need more proof that he’s a global superstar, check out his win list—it includes Malaysia, France, Nigeria, Spain, South Korea, Canada, and the United States, just to name a few.
10. FedEx Cup champion
In 2008, Singh added another feather to his cap by winning the FedEx Cup. That meant he had officially dominated an entire season, proving yet again that he was one of the best to ever play.
11. The Family Guy
Through all the travel and trophies, Singh has always prioritized his family. He’s been married to Ardena Seth since 1985, and they have a son, Qass Singh, born in 1990.
12. Singh knows how to give back to the community
Singh hasn’t forgotten his roots. Over the years, he’s been a big supporter of charities, especially those helping underprivileged kids in Fiji. He knows what it’s like to struggle, and he’s making sure others don’t have to.
13. Masterchef Singh?
Who knew Vijay Singh was also a foodie? At the 2001 Masters Champions Dinner, he switched things up with a Thai-inspired menu, featuring Chicken Panang Curry and Seafood Tom Kah. Golf and good food? Now that’s a winning combo.

14. PGA Tour Champions success
Most golfers over 50 settle for casual weekend rounds. Not Singh. He kept on winning, picking up titles at the Toshiba Classic and Charles Schwab Cup Championship in 2018. Some guys just don’t know how to retire!

15. The hardest worker
If you’re wondering what makes Singh different, here’s your answer: his work ethic is insane. He’s the guy who shows up hours early, stays hours late, and hits the range until the sun goes down. He lives in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and follows Hinduism, which he credits for his discipline and focus.
Singh’s story is the ultimate underdog tale. From whacking coconuts in Fiji to taking down Tiger Woods and rewriting golf history, he’s done it all. As he celebrates his 62nd birthday, we celebrate him—not just as a golfer but as a legend. He’s the best for a reason, and now you have 15 more reasons to remember why!
