Viktor Hovland has finally done it! After 19 months of a winless streak and swing struggles, he at last won a title. It’s true that stats were certainly favoring Justin Thomas during the Valspar Championship, it’s the Norwegian who came out on top in the end. Witnessing the actual cinema of his performance now the golfer insiders have some comments of their own.
It happened recently on Golf Podcast with Rex and Lev. The video had a motivating title by the way as it says “It’s the journey, not the destination: What Viktor Hovland’s win tells us.” Rex Hoggard and the insider took their time and discussed everything about the Norwegian’s win in a 52-minute-long video. While doing so they talked about Viktor Hovland doing some drills in the range. “Viktor Hovland was on the range basically shutting it down after that opening 80, just hitting driver after driver after driver, knowing that he was close. He’d spoken with a Norwegian journalist prior to the Arnold Palmer Invitational as well where he felt like, I finally had a breakthrough something like good scores are going to be coming, of course when you shoot 80 it’s a setback, at least initially, but he knew he was on the right path.”
Guess, he certainly was. The golfer missed the cut at both the PLAYERS and Arnold Palmer Invitational. Despite that, he felt a different sensation in his shots as he was confident about scoring well. Fast forward to the Valspar Championship, the golfer finished with a score of 11-under 273 to Thomas’s 10-under 274. Yes, he bogeyed on the Copperhead in the final round, but birdies on the Moccasin and the Rattler were there to save him from the disaster.

Further in the podcast, the insider also talked about Viktor Hovland’s path saying “It led to the Valspar Championship I think that it is further proof that you are not going to outwork Viktor Hovland you are not going to outsmart Viktor Hovland.” One can say it was a bold claim from the insider. However, Hovland has been very resilient since last year and was on a winless streak for 19 months.
After the struggles with his swing, the golfer literally tried everything. He not only changed his swing coach but even tried different putters and golf shoes. The admiration doesn’t stop here. They also pointed out how the field was stacked with pros like Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, and more. Despite that, they were no match for him. While appreciating his performance the insider also gave Hovland the title of “Perfectionist.”

Interestingly, the 27-year-old wasn’t sure whether he would play in the Valspar Championship. Could it be due to his performance at the PLAYERS Championship? Sky Sports recently revealed that he only decided to tee off after he reached the Copperhead Course. However, grateful to end his drought, the Norwegian said “It feels unbelievable. It’s been quite the struggle the past year and a half, so for me to come back and win this tournament is quite incredible because I was not very hopeful with my game leading into this week. Just goes to show this game is pretty crazy.” Despite this incredible win, Hovland believes he isn’t ready for the Masters.

What does Viktor Hovland have to say about Masters?
Viktor Holland now holds seven PGA Tour titles, however, he has yet to win a major. With the Augusta showdown knocking on the door, Hovland isn’t going to take this win for granted and aspires to become even better. That’s right, not long after winning the title the golfer talked about his swing and skill set needed for Masters saying “Some of the shots that I’m hitting, it’s going to make it really difficult for me to be in contention at Augusta if I don’t rectify that problem, if I don’t see the improvements there,” as revealed on the mirror.

Isn’t he being too hard on himself? That’s what you might be thinking right now. Well, the interviewer also asked him the same question a few days ago and this is what he said: “I am hard on myself, yeah, but that’s also why I am good.” It certainly justifies the title Golf Channel had as he isn’t going to stop and will try to wear the green jacket next month.
