The LIV Golf series has moved on to its third event this week, with Trump’s Bedminster golf course playing host. Being conducted parallelly along with other PGA and DP Tours, the rebel series continues to disrupt the existing golf calendar. With tensions set to rise following an imminent appeal from LIV golfers over participation in next month’s FedEx Cup playoffs, 21-time PGA winner, Davis Love III, has his say.

Davis Love III: “We’re not playing, that solves it, right?”
The 1997 PGA Championship winner has heard whispers about the looming legal challenge from LIV golfers to challenge existing golf bodies. He has put together a solution, too, but don’t expect it to be quiet and simple. “Here’s the biggest lever and it’s not the nice lever,” he told Sports Illustrated. “If a group of veterans and a group of top current players align with 150 guys on the Tour, and we say, ‘Guess what? We’re not playing, that solves it, right?…”
He further added, “If LIV guys play in the U.S. Open, we’re not playing. If they sue in court, and they win, well, we’re not playing. You know, there won’t be a U.S. Open. It’s just like a baseball strike.”

Davis Love III, who has skippered his side on two occasions, most notably in the 2016 US victory, will be leading Team USA again in this year’s Presidents Cup. He will have to make team selections within a few weeks, though his decisions might be severely hampered considering LIV tournaments. LIV has two events scheduled prior to the Presidents Cup, in Boston and Chicago respectively.
What could be the ‘Solution’?
Undeniably, Love’s answer is not a ‘nice lever’ and could lead to further widening between two sets of the best golfers on the planet. As Irish golfer, Rory McIlroy, suggested, it would be best if the two parties sit down and have a discussion to work things out.

This Sunday concludes the Rocket Mortgage Classic, followed by the Wyndham Championship in Memphis. As of now, only Brooks Koepka remains eligible to take the field amongst the LIV golfers, with major championship winners Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Sergio Garcia among those who have already resigned their Tour membership.

That would conclude the events in the regular campaign, with September’s President Cup a cornerstone affair for premier golfers. Participation in that competition, however, will be up in the air, with a legal battle ensuing.
